hey i was just wondering if any of you have been on antidepressents and have drank at the same time. im on effexor..and the instructions say 'Do not mix with alchohol' and when i asked the doctor he said dont drink on this... but i mean its not like it says 'Harmful or fatal if mixed with alchohol' in my mind its just going to probably mess you up more. i have drank on other medications. i was just wondering if it would screw up my liver and what not.. this is a pretty worthless thread. i actually do have alot of common sense. im just looking for someone to say ive mixed pills and alchohol alot, and nothing ever happened.. then ill feel better... if not.. then i guess ill see what happens.
if the Dr. says don't drink well... don't drink... check online also, there should be some kind of info for that drug online.
holden -- I've don't have any personal anecdotes to set your mind at ease, however, here's a link to a web page with all sorts of info about effexor. http://www.gettingwell.com/drug_info/rxdrugprofiles/drugs/EFF1153.shtml In it, they state that the drug does not interact with alcohol, but the manufacter warns against taking them together. I would suspect because both effexor and alcohol can make you drowsy. So if you're hell-bent on mixing them, don't drive and, for God's sake, don't operate heavy machinery!
I've drank on xanax and valium. It makes you messed up and if you don't over do it by taking to many pills or drinking a keg you should be fine. Pretty much every college kid I know has done it before- its funny- it is ok to take pills and drink but no one does coke or anything like that. Don't ever do xtasy that stuff is terrible-worse than acid. P.S. Take it easy, don't drive.
Hmmm I was taking pretty much some of the strongest antibiotics for one year and I think I was not supposed to drink alcohol with that either, but still did. I wonder if that has any long-term effects (other than me being an idiot? )? Any doctors here?
Jackie: you're not supposed to drink with anti-biotics because it can nullify the effects of the medication. smashfast: You're not supposed to drink with downers (like Valium and Xanax) cause it can increase the effect, which is why people often do it. HOLDEN: As for anti-depressants, you're not supposed to drink because it can cause psychotic reactions or, if you really do it up, kill you. A good friend of mine died from booze and anti-anxiety pills a couple months ago. He wasn't even depressed at the time and he definitely wasn't trying to die. I've known other people who have completely lost their minds mixing head pills with booze. Not like they were just really drunk -- like they weren't themselves at all and it made them desperate and dangerous. If you're on head pills which you're not supposed to drink with DON'T EVER DRINK. Ever. I'm not a doctor by any means, but I have a great deal of experience (myself or friends) with drugs, mind drugs and alcohol. Don't **** around with this.
I've drank on Xanax, Soma, Rohibnol, Valium, Codeine, Vicodin...and any pill in anybody's cabinet that when cross-referenced with "The Pill Book" said not to take with alcohol. That used to be my passtime before I found my remaining brain cells. I'll tell you it never even gave me a scare, but that could just be as a result of me drinking and being a pill-f*** for about 6 months straight. I wasn't a nice guy though Holden, so don't keep this behavior up because it had me more outside of my personality than all the other, more "hardcore" drugs I was doing. Oh, and if you're a smoker (of whatever variety), watch out for falling asleep and burning stuff. I have this one pair of nylon pants that have about 30 little cigarette sized holes in them.
Hopefully the above warnings are sufficient: don't screw around with this stuff. There's a web message board at www.dr-bob.org/babble where people discuss all their antidepressants and other meds. They should be able to answer any questions about it. (I just know about this because I was looking for an old friend on the Internet and found her there... seems that she's been having a severe battle with depression and been on lots of different meds) Good luck...
To repeat, and to back up Dallas, drinking on all the stuff he mentioned is dumb cause you get very wasted. But it's not near as dumb as drinking on anti-depressants. The problem there's not making you extra, extra wasted -- it's making you psychotic or dead. Don't just be careful. Do not do it.
This kid I know was taking that stuff and he drank one night. The next day at school, he had a seizure. If I remember correctly, he had multiple seizures that week at various places.
