Just now finding the time to post this.....I was without internet yesterday, and limited access while at work today.

Lightning hit the pole closest to my house Saturday morning. We're still finding things around the house that are fried. So far, I found that I lost:

    Cable modem
    Router
    Switch
2 network cards (of the five network cards connect to the router and switch, I lost the 2 connected to the switch, but not the 3 on the router....wierd)
    1 TV
    half my Christmas lights
    and 1 monitor is sickly

But the big thing, the thing that scared us the most, was the gas fire in the attic. We have a gas furnace, and the electronic controller that cuts off gas flow if you lose your pilot light was fried to the point where it started a gas fire blowing out the back of it. Moments after the strike (we were all awake, the noise rocked us out of bed), my wife is in the hall and hears a hissing noise. I open the attic door to see flames. I went up and shut the main gas cut-off valve to the furnace, and the fire went out. It's been a really freaky weekend.

WOW. Man, Behad, it's been a bad year or so for you. You're going to have somebody look at that aren't you? I mean, I wouldn't assume everything's ok now - there's no telling what other damage could've been done.

Anyway, good luck and stay safe. High winds up here in the Dallas area as well. Lots of small fires being started by downed power lines sparking dry grass apparently. Wind gusts were over 50 mph from what I've read.

D*mn Behad, I think that you're pretty lucky that your wife was as alert as she was. Could have been REALLY BAD instead of just an annoyance.

Man, that sucks dude. Hope nothing else is messed up in/with your house.

We had some crazy wind at my house today in CS. It listerally blew over every chair in our backyard (one really strong gust) and our round GLASS tables out there. crazy wind.

Definitely getting a furnace man out before I turn the gas back on. Funny thing, we've been planning on buying a new ac/furnace system in January. Now we may have to bump that up a month.

I forgot to list all the phone wiring in the attic is fried. We only have a single working phone, coming from a line added later and separate from the main system. Phone company coming tomorrow. (FYI people... if you have Verizon, be sure you sign up for inside wire maintenance. I've had it for years, and it finally pays off.) Cable man was out yesterday.

One last casualty...as soon as I posted this thread, the BBS went down. Sorry Clutch.

Were your important electronics plugged into surge protectors? And if so, did the surge protectors fail?

Glad you got the gas furnace problem fixed. Sounds like that could have been way worse.

Yes they are plugged into surge protectors. Most of the computer damage came in thru the cable line.

I heard this could happen. I purchased a surge protector that has a cable in/out as well. I wonder if it would stop that kind of thing though.

    Glad your family is safe.
