Here's my situation: I've already signed up for Earthlink (through Time Warner) for my apartment. I would LOVE to get DirecTV satellite access as well (for NFL Sunday's of course), but the apartment has only one cable wire/outlet, which will be used by the cable modem. Is it possible to have both satellite and cable share the same wire? Yes I've called DirecTV Customer Reps twice in the past 24 hours. Both times they've told me it is possible, but I don't believe them. Why? Because when I ask for an explanation, they say "well, the installer handles that, not us." I tell them, "I don't want to order this service, have an installer come to my home and ultimately tell me its not do-able unless he installs a new cable outlet, which would be a no-no with the apartment complex." How can a splitter allow for two different services to share the same wire? I can't wrap my mind around this concept. Of course, being the pushy reps that they are, they say, "Just give us your credit card number now, we'll give you the special deal, and everything will be fine." These guys rival the "gym counselors" for most pushiest salespeople ever. But my question is, is it possible? I've searched the web, only to find other people asking the same question and not getting a straight answer, other than "do DSL dude." I'm not a DSL fan, drapg don't play dat.
I dont see why it would be a problem. Two signals can be used on one line but I dont see them setting it up that way. Satellite is not set up the same way cable is. You cant split it the same way that you can cable. You have the line coming in from the satellite dish that goes in to a main splitter. You then have individual lines going directly to each receiver. These lines cannot be interfered with (i.e. split) in any way. The cable for the internet should not be connected to the satellite "network" at all. Anyway, I dont see why they couldnt do all of this for you. Hopefully that somewhat answers your question. This is from my own personal experience and may differ from other peoples.
I still don't understand MB. One cable outlet in an apartment to utilize two different networks (cable and satellite) doesn't seem possible. Obviously a splitter is needed INSIDE the apartment to send this funkdafied signal to the cable modem and to the dish receiver. But it can't be your ordinary, run-of-the-mill splitter (which I have tons of). It must be magical in some way, to differentiate between the cable and satellite services and split them to their appropriate devices. Color me confused.
