I thinking Van will take Battier, because they want to attract fans. Battier is a "proven" talent (at least most people in Memphis has seen him on TV). Gasol is still consider an "unknown" commodity. Maybe Van is willing to deal their #6 now.

By acquiring Knight, I guess they are still planning to move Bibby.

    Actually Almu,

The deal has been done, but it can't be completed until July 18th. That's the day when Shareef's base year salary will increase to match the salary of both wright and knight.

    http://www.gomemphis.com/newca/sports/062701/s27griz.htm

On a side note, am I missing something? This deal looks to me like atlanta got shafted. I know knight is marginal, but wright and the 3rd pick in the draft seems like an awful lot to give up for shareef.

Knight is marginal and Lorenzon Wright is marginal. Wright was a spare part in Atlanta (Ratliff, Mohammed, Henderson, etc). Atlanta makes the playoffs next year now, no doubt. So, they gave up the 3 pick for a guaranteed all star level player.

Vancouver probably guaranteed itself a top 5 pick (which may have been the goal). They've got a shot at a bright future if all the young guys pan out though.

The Hawks were 25-57 this season, 16 games out of the 8th spot. They just got SAR who "helped" the Grizz to a 23-59 record.

    I don't see how 1 loser + another loser = +16 games...

This thread started out pretty informative but is now just humourous. Atlanta got shafted??? Shareef is going to bust out with a fresh new game nextyear??? Does anyone even read the stats or watch Shareef play? Don't get me wrong, the number 3 pick is a great pick and has, if you look, put out some good players over the last 10 years (G. Hill, Stackhouse, even Rahim himself) but Shareef puts up 20 ppp, grabs 9! rpg, over 3 apg, is generally a team player and doesnt have horrible defense. In return, Atlanta gives up two crappy players and a number 3 pick which may be something special, or may be the next BIlly Owens, Christian Laettner or Chauncey Billups (also number 3 picks). Rahim will make Atlanta a much better team, especially if they can stay healthy. With Terry, Rahim, Kukoc, and Ratliff, and an improving cast of role players ala Nazr, I think Atlanta will be on the up and up. Vancouver/Memphis, on the other hand, doesnt get much from this trade, IMO. Sure, they get the pick, but thyeve had picks and picks and picks and picks over the last 5 years and still, the SUCK. Myswell keep Rahim and promote him as a star in Memphis.

Wow Atlanta just robbed Vancouver! Basically they're dumping spare parts in Brevin Knight and Wright, and getting Rahim for the #3 pick. There isn't a pick in this year's draft that Atlanta can get that is even close to Rahim, who is still very young. Why couldn't the Rockets try to get Rahim instead of living in a pipe dream and trying to get Webber!?

Just to add a little note to this trade:
Vancouver/Memphis did this deal (likely) in order to "start over" in a new city with a new team. If only they could get out from under Big Country's huge deal. Knight will either be a quality backup PG or possibly Bibby's replacement if the team decides to move Bibby in a trade. Also, don't forget that Lorenzen Wright was a star at Memphis in college and should be a drawing card for fans. Plus, he does have some game, too. If they take Gasol, the Griz have a potential star around which to build. The fact that Rahim was making the max may have had something to do with this deal as well. The team may be trying to dump salary (re: Bibby being traded before he's a FA).

Remember when Dallas had the 3 Js but weren't winning games and traded them all away. Then Don Nelson came on and wondered what possessed them to trade away Jason Kidd. I think the same thing is happening to the Grizzlies. They've got some great players and want to give them away for peanuts.

    JV,

What's your point? Dallas is a much better team now than they were with those players. And surely your not implying that keeping kidd, mashburn, and jackson, on the team longer would have made their team better than they are right now.

I watched White his entire year at Charlotte, he IS NOT ready to contribute immediately, and it will take him a year or 2 to really be a serious contributor. He isn't strong enough under the basket, and would have to bulk up, and he relies to much on his perimeter shot. He will go through the same growing pains as Dermarr Johnson and Cory Maggette. Eddie Griffith will be good, but not an immediate impact. I'm telling you guys, this year's draft WILL NOT have an immediate impact player. It isn't a fluke that last years class didn't have an immediate impact player, the drafts are being watered down and diluted by high school players and early entry players from college.

    Two points:

    1) Dallas is good now, but they could have been good awhile ago. They stunk because they got 10 cents on the dollar in the trades they made for the 3 Js. The same thing is happening to Van right now: they're setting the whole program back by not getting enough in trade.

    2) If Dallas was going to do a fire-sale, they should have traded Jackson and Mashburn and kept Kidd. Kidd was obviously the best of the 3, obviously had a high ceiling, obviously a player you can build a team around. If the chemistry doesn't work, you don't turn in all your cards, you keep the best and trade in all the others. Vancouver is starting down the same path by getting rid of their best player, Abdur-Rahim, and will likely continue by trading Bibby and maybe Dickerson as well.

    One more point, for kicks:

Dallas of the 3 Js didn't suck because of the 3 Js. They sucked because of management. They didn't start winning until Cuban came in. The management they now have with Nelson and Cuban has turned this team into winners -- you could see it start midseason when Cuban took over. They could have done the same thing with the 3 Js that they did do with the current squad. In the same way, Vancouver continues to be managed by losers and the team will keep losing as a result. If Cuban and Nelson -- or Les, CD and RT; or any of a number of successful offices -- had Vancouver's roster, they'd be in the playoffs right now.

    JV,

I agree if bibby gets traded it will be a major mistake for memphis, and prolly if dickerson gets traded too. But that doesn't mean that they made a mistake trading shareef. Take dallas, for example. I agree that they made some idiot trades, but they also made some good trades. The kidd trade, for example, got them finley, sam cassell, a descent ac green, and a second round pick for kidd and tony dumas. You can't possible think that phoenix got the better of that trade. I would consider trading michael finley for Jason kidd straight up at this point in their careers. Now I understand hindsight is 20/20 but the point is that the star player in a trade don't always point to the winner of the trade. As the saying goes, the real trade is in the details. How will Wright develop, for example? Last season he made good enough progress to at least consider that point. He might end up being as good as shareef by himself alone.
