So I'm at that point where my contract with Sprint is almost up and I'm looking at my options. Right now I'm leaning towards renewing it and upgrading my phone. My first option is the Instinct, but seeing as its been out for a little while now, I'm leery that a newer product may come out and I'd miss out on something better.

That brings me to the braintrust here at CF.net. I'm sure yous guys will help me see the light.

Does anyone have this phone? Is it worth it and how happy are you with it? I've checked it out some and it still looks pretty good. Is it able to download games like older models are? What about the touch screen, is it decent?

    Thanks in advance.

I just got it a little over a month ago and I really like it.

The navigation is pretty smooth, and the built-in GPS is actually pretty good.

You can also put movies on it pretty easily.

I'm an owner and I love that phone. I have owned the Razr, Razr2, Blackjack, Blackjack II, T-Mobile Dash, and some other phones but, never really got around in liking 'em. I joined Sprint this past year and bought this phone for 100 bucks and I have been really happy with it.

The overall functionality and quality of the phone is marvelous at least to me needs. Web browsing is not the best but, surely gets the jobs done. Some said it would be the iPhone killer but, not nearly as great since iPhone has alot of supporting apps which makes it almost unbeatable.

If your not an Apple brand "band wagoner" I would really honestly recommend this phone.

Does Sprint offer any Blackberry options? Isn't it getting the Pre soon?

Both of those would be better choices IMO.

Well I've never been big on Apple, but I do have a touch. It would be pretty cool if I could get WIFI everywhere with it, but I can't.

Good to hear its a good phone, I may go with it. I've looked online a little and it looks like the second generation to it is to come out soon. Its supposedly called the Samsung Dash. If this is the case, I'll wait a couple of months for that one.

With the Instinct though, can you play games like Tetris on it? Also moestavern, did you say you could use it as a modem?

It depends on what kind of phone you want. I'm a mentor at Sprint tech support and to be honest with you, the Instinct can be one of the most unreliable phones we offer. It is too dependent on its firmware updates for my tastes, and if you ever have an issue with the phone freezing that a normal reset can't fix (which happens far more fequently with the instincts that any of our other phones) you have no options with which to do a manual RTN (hard reset) because there's no keypad. Still, when the phone's working, it's pretty nice and has a sleek interface. Works well as a phone and has great video capability (cameral leave a lot to be desired though). It is NOT a PDA however, so the web browser is a bit more limited, as is file usage and movement.

My fav phones at the moment are the Touch Pro and Palm Pre. Of course, I'm biased towards phones with touchscreens and keypads because they're easier to program (still have a HTC Mogul myself). I also tend to like Windows Mobile phones more because of the almost limitless amount of free apps that can easily be installed onto them and also their overall versatility.

    WAIT.

A new product is coming that will replace the Instinct. In the beginning it was being called the Samsung Instinct Mini but recently Electronista revealed that the phone will be called the Samsung Dash.

Also, since your with Sprint, dont forget about the Palm Pre, that is if Palm can stay afloat long enough to launch the phone.

I'd get the diamond over the instinct. Much more mod goodness from it. GPS, fm radio, wifi (w/ tethering), and far more dev and program support. The screen is slightly smaller than the instinct (2.8") but it boasts a crystal clear VGA resolution and a processor quick enough to play movies and youtube on it. The phone is as thick and long as a RAZR.

If you want a keyboard, I'd look at the Touch Pro, but that's in a much higher price range than the instinct.

Online the price for the Diamond is 200 bucks and for the instinct is 130AR. Instead of going to a store or buying it online, I would call them up, and dial for retentions to negotiate for renwing your plan.

There you can tell them that you've been a loyal customer for# years, and you'd like to stay. There's a phone you want but it's too expensive, and that you'd want a Diamond for 50-100 bucks (or the instinct for free). Somewhere along the way mention the iphone or the android phone.

Make it so that you're asking them to work with you and help you stay on (2 years). Doing so, you won't have to threaten to cancel at all (some people do that, but it's not necessary or the best way).

I've even read some accounts where they ask for bonus minutes, text messages or free vision. They heard their clutchfan friend got 200 minutes for renewing, or they demand it outright.

By being nice, confident and clear, you don't have to be dishonest or rude.

If a rep refuses your request or doesn't give a satisfying offer, thank them and call again until you get someone who wants to give you a positive customer experience.

People generally avoid this route because of Sprint's customer service hell, but if you're willing to spend time, no other carrier beats the flexibility these reps can give you.

EDIT: The Pre sounds good too. Doing this could save you a 100-150 off the retail AR price.

OFT. All you have to do is get past Customer service to our account services or even the tech dept. If you are patient, you WILL get hooked up.

Not to threadjack, but what's your take on the Pre? When will it be released?

Basically I beileve it will be the best of the non-Windows based devices. The Iphone-ish interface is nice, as is the wireless charging, but the best part is that its webOS (linux based) operating system is a big step up for Palm, whose systems have for too often been more complicated and disorganized than necessary (much like Blackberry, which still rediculously need their own provisioning SOCs, but that's another story). The ease of use and the fact that it's finally a palm with a slide out keypad (about time) are going to make it very popular. One drawback is that it doesn't have Palm's usual desktop sync capability, but there are other options for the transfer and backing up of data.

As far as the release date goes, I'm honestly not sure. Corporate will tell us it's coming out one week, then completely scrap that like 2 hours later. I just go with Palm's original prediction of "Spring Quarter" and leave it at that, whatever that means (they've now adjusted that to "first half, 2009," which I suppose even makes June a possibility).

    Agreed.

Samsung is releasing a Google Android phone for Sprint in Q2. I'm not buying ANYTHING until I see that one.

I'm still not sure if I WANT to upgrade. I'm already using the greatest phone ever made: The Nokia 3588i

Thanks. I'll definitely be taking the advice. Looking at it though, I may wait for the second generation of the Instinct, Dash or whatever it is. I'm going to check out the Diamond as well. Hopefully they will come out with some dates here shortly for the new stuff.

because you're with sprint, your only option is to wait for the Palm Pre

as already mentioned above, sprint is putting all their eggs in the Pre basket, and it's for a good reason, so wait for it, it's coming out no later than mid april
