Never been to Costco, but I go to Sam's about once a month. I just wish one was closer.

Did anybody know that Sam's Club doesn't take Mastercard?

My friend was about to buy a video tape there, but he didn't have the cash on him, so he whips out his Mastercard...

"Sorry sir, but we only accept the Discover Card"

What the heck? No Mastercard OR Visa?? Geez, you might as well turn down cash, too...

I mean, who the hell doesn't accept Mastercard...It's only the most widely accepted credit card in the world...Geez, I think those guys that sell newspapers next to freeway overpasses take Mastercard and Visa...Hell, you can pay for a hummer from a stripper with your Mastercard! Uhhh...not that I would know about that, or anything...

    Sorry, had to vent...carry on...

Yet ANOTHER reason to hate the Disney conglomerate

A-Train, proud owner of a Capital One Mastercard...

Sorry, moestavern, but I don't think a condom with an expiration date of May 1997 really counts :p

    Necro-Bump but relevant.

I have both highest-level memberships for the next six months.

    Which should I keep?

    Sam's:
    • Pros:
      • Scan and go (scan and check out with your phone, walk out)
      • Prices seem lower
      • Club is a little nicer
      • I can use non-Sams CCs, hence get cash back
      • Personal: It's closer and easier to access
    • Cons:
      • It's Walmart corp, so it's the evil empire
      • The clientele leans a little more old and redneck.
        • Slower in the store
        • Angry in the parking lot
        • Less eye candy
        • Less mask wearing during pandemic
    Costco:
    • Pros:
      • Membership services/perks are much better (mortgage refi for me)
      • Clientele is a little more upscale
        • Much more eye candy
        • Faster and more efficient in store
        • Nicer people overall
      • Staff is much more customer-service oriented.
      • Unlimited returns (haven't tested). Sam's supposedly has the same but it was a pita last time I tried.
    • Cons:
      • Corporate is much more people friendly
      • Have to actually use a register, resulting in delay to get out. This is a big deal during peak shopping hours.
      • Have to use debit or Costco CC
      • Prices are higher
      • Personal: Local location is farther from my house and it's poorly placed so ingress and exit are a PITA due to traffic/lights.

Personally while the prices at CostCo are a little higher, I feel like their product quality is higher to match. That's why I stick with CostCo.

You can use any visa credit card at a Costco. You'll get 2% back with the costco credit card, but you can use any visa.

EDIT: I was wrong about the percentage back. It's 4% for gas, but only 2% for regular warehouse purchase.
