This day has been awful! I've had 2 TVs, with PIP and have been trying to keep up with the OU game, A&M game, Notre Damegame , Sampras' match, Agassi's match, Oregon game, and the Florida game starts in an hour... i need more TVs!!!! sampras looked good today...
Sampras played a crap opponent and barely squeaked out the first 2 sets...the final is on right now....
Apparently you missed Pete's dominant win over Roddick. The guy has picked it up big-time. And Shalken is hardly a "crap" opponent. He had to be good to make it to the semifinals of the US open. Pete held his serve for the entire match, and easily won the decisive set. Straight sets is straight sets. Sampras all the way!
Sampras always plays well when he meet Agassi. He is the only player able to get in to the head of Agassi. I've seen it many times before and I think Pistol Pete will take this one. But Andre sure did play well against Hewitt
I hope Agassi is able to beat Sampras this time. It seems every time Sampras plays Agassi in a final, he just plays out of his mind (I'm not saying the guy isn't a great player, he just always seems to bring it even more).
Gotta go with Andre. Pete has stepped up his game and is looking good. However, Agassi's playing as good as he's ever played right now. He just beat the # 1 player in the world who wasn't playing bad at all. A-squared was just that good. Don't take tomorrow's match for granted, folks. Could be the last time either one wins a major, and likely the final time we see an Agassi-Sampras final in a major. Azim da Dream
Well, if it is indeed the last time that these greats ever meet in a final, it is only fitting that a tradition continues. GO PETE(19-14 all-time against Andre, 3-1 against Andre in Grand Slam Finals)
one of the greatest volleys i have ever seen was in that agassi-hewitt match. great great match. you notice how pete is going bald? he should shave his head for the big one tomarrow. cherish this tennis fans. this probably wont happen again. im excited.
Finally mens tennis has something I can look forward to. Its going to be awesome. And the best thing - its going to be on HD! woo hoo
But what are their records on hard courts?--that is much more telling. I'll route for Andre--at least he can play on all surfaces.
If Andre plays at the level he did today, there's no contest. Pete really struggled today against a player with less of a return game than Andre, and a serve with less power. He did win in straight sets, but he had his problems. Also, Pete really seemed to have some problems with playing during the day, as was mentioned on TV. He seemed like the heat was bothering him at times, or at least more than other players. I don't know if Andre will be as focused as today, but I think he'll be close enough to win. The level Hewitt was playing at was a tier above everyone else, and for Agassi to dominate the match like he did was remarkable. I'd be fine with either one of them winning, since they are both class acts, but I'm taking Andre in four sets.
I just hope it goes to five sets. I could care less who wins. I like both of em. Just make it a good match.
i hope it will be a great match. Both of them want to win badly.Sampras has beaten Agassi twice in the US Open final before but this time I think Agassi will win.Pete's serve and volley game isn't as dangerous as it used to be,and Andre's serve has been excellent in this tournament along with his usual solid ground stroke game.
10-9 in Sampras's favor. Is that supposed to be a shot at Pete...? Anyway, it is the clay court that Pete cannot play on(Even that is hard to buy, since Pete was always a contender at the French, just couldn't ever win that last big match...also went to the finals at the Houston Clay Court Championships this year). He simply dominated everywhere east and west of Paris. Pete is IMO the greatest tennis player ever. Now, all that isn't to say that Andre isn't also a great player. Arthur, Roy, and Jimmy were amazing as well. I just think that Pete plays the game the way it is supposed to be played.
Pete Sampras is a great player, and will go down as a better player than Agassi, even though Agassi was able to win majors on all surfaces. I think Sampras is in the group of the top players ever, including Borg, Mac and some of the other guys you mention. However I think Sampras's number of majors is inflated by two factors--there were not many top quality rivals (I don't know what Agassi was doing most of the time, chasing tail maybe), and he dominated grass when everyone else was focused on the surfaces for most tournaments. As for him not being one of my favorites, nothing personal, just think his game lacks flair and dimension. Thus I see his game as extremely effective and methodical--but not reflecting the aspects of tennis that make the sport interesting. I think most Tennis folks consider Rod Laver the best ever (I think the only guy other than Agassi to win majors on all surfaces), but he won a lot less majors than he would have because they banned him for being a professional I believe.
