    NBA player Sam Mack arrested

    July 12, 2000

PHOENIX, Ill. (AP) -- Sam Mack, released by the Golden State
Warriors in March, was arrested Tuesday after officers said they
found 19 bags of mar1juana in his car.

    Mack, a 6-foot-7 swingman, ran a stop sign, prompting a high-speed
chase through Phoenix, Ill., a Chicago suburb, Lt. Vernon Mitchell
    said.

Mack, 30, refused to pull over and led police on a chase that began at
7 p.m. EDT and reached speeds of 70 mph on city streets where the
speed limit is 25 mph, Mitchell said. After about six blocks, police
forced Mack to pull over his Range Rover and arrested him.

The mar1juana was found in Mack's vehicle, along with a rock-like
substance that will be analyzed to determine if it is a drug, Mitchell
said. A small weight scale also was found, along with $2,800 in cash.

Mack played six years in the NBA, including stints with San Antonio, Houston, Vancouver and Golden
    State.

That amount of Pot suggests that he is either one hell of a smoker, or that he deals the stuff. The weight scales also suggest that he deals.

Why would a guy earning anything like what NBA players get paid risk it all to pick up some minor cash selling gear?If it's true, he is as stupid as he appears to be...and he runs a red light whilst carrying it all!!

If true, he's a dead man walking - that's the sort of apolitical move that can exclude you from pro sports forever...

    Too bad. I liked Sam...

I know Sam pretty well, and I highly doubt he is an addict. The news does suprise me, because I have been out with him before and he gave me no signs of drug usage. He was very particular about a certain situation. He is a very good guy, I hope it was someone elses, but if not, big mistake Sam.

This sucks. I really liked Sam and was hoping that the Rockets would have re-signed him last year. Now I'm glad they didn't (if the story is correct). And I bet that the Rockets are glad they made that decision too.

Rudy knows people and he did the right thing.

Never question Rudy again!!! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Sorry Sam but the excuse that it was not mine is lame. A joint or 2 fine but 19 bags with scales and it was HIS car. [IMG]

Actually, I think this is Rudy's fault. If he had signed Mack to a multi-year deal last year, Sam would've had enough money and wouldn't have had to resort to dealing drugs. ( [IMG])

He is gonna be locked up for a long time unfortunately. I liked the guy too, and he just probably got caught at the wrong place/wrong time. As for those who keep mentioning if this story is true or not, do people really doubt the AP?
Have you even looked at the link?
Is it not valid? Just wondering if some of you needed a CNN reporter to come officially tell all of you what happened at your doorstep.

It doesn't matter if it's his or not...it's in his car and he is going to jail for a good while. Maybe he will learn how to play some defense during some prison ball games. I don't feel sorry for the guy because he is stupid. It's okay if he wants to smoke a few buds every now and then BUT 19 bags and a scale? Definite intent to distribute whether he intended to or not. Anybody with a successful NBA career who feels they must carry around 19 bags of dope and some rocks is definitely a screwed up person. I guess all that money was burning a hole in his pocket. If it's his friend's drugs and not his, then he is even stupider than a regular stupid guy for carrying it around for the guy. Boo hoo...I can't stick with a team so I might as well dabble in drugs. Now I know what he was doing all that time sitting out during the season when he was not signing with the Rockets or any other team. He was getting high and lounging.

I don't see the connection between Mack's arrest and the Rockets not resigning him. I was and still am ambivalent about letting him go as an FA. But the drug arrest doesn't validate the decision for me. If he's banned from the league, does his salary still count against the cap?

I HOPE that no one is referring to me. I never said I did not believe the AP, I just said the story suprises me due to the relationship I have with him. I never saw that side of him. The story is true, its just suprising and disheartening. I hope the best for him.

Well, the Cowboys have been looking for a big target to split out opposite of Galloway not that Ervin has retired. Seems like a logical choice to me!

As Arliss would be quit to point out, Sam Mack isn't a drug dealer... he's a pot dealer.

Which reminds me....this 80 year old lady down the street had a bunch of pots from Mexico sent to her so that she could sell them. To advertise she put a little notice in the local paper that said "Mexican Pot Sale This Week End Only. This isn't the cheap stuff that you find around town". Needless to say, the authorites wanted to ask were a few questions before they ended up laughing themselves back to their cars.
