Some NBA draft moves are just dumbfounding Statesman Sports Columnist On Deck> By Sam King November 22, 2002 The NBA Draft is a place where teams can pick up new talents to help the future of the program in a hopeful sway toward the top of the league. So as I sit here dumbfounded, looking at past NBA Drafts, wondering what some of these teams were thinking. Take this past summer for example. The Rockets selected Yao Ming, who just recently scored 20 points in one game, giving him 59 for his NBA career. Ming is worthless. The guy has the future of Gheorge Muresan, if any former Washington Bullet fans can remember him. Muresan had a better movie career, starring in everyone's favorite, "My Giant." My favorite Gheorge Muresan moment would be of him dunking over Horace Grant, only to drool on his head in the process of doing so. For ballers who should be able to drop the ball in the hoop without leaving the ground, these men are simply pathetic excuses for professional athletes. So the Bulls picked up "Jay" Williams with the second pick. Now this guy is a great basketball player with a beautiful crossover dribble. So what if he can't hit free-throws under pressure, and so what if the Bulls really should have drafted Mike Dunleavy because of his size and shooting ability, this guy can dribble. In fact, he does it so well that he sees it fit to be known as "Jay" after going through three years at Duke as Jason. Hey, Dick Vitale loves the guy no matter what he goes by. Gee, do you think the fact that he went to Duke has anything to do with that? Denver, who should be forced to play in the NIT tournament this March just to see if they can actually win something, drafted Nikiloz Tskitishvili. Way to go Denver! The entire team roster goes as follows: Juwan Howard, Marcus Camby and that basically sums it up. What a major franchise decision to pick up this guy over Chris Wilcox, Juan Dixon, or Caron Butler. No knock on Tskitishvili; I mean, the guy is averaging three points per game and pulls down 1.6 boards per game. The most amazing news is that the guy is only seven-feet tall and can't even manage to get two rebounds a game. Meanwhile, Caron Butler, all of 6'7," manages to pull down 5.2 boards per game and score almost 13 per contest. So once again, I ask, whatever happened to lottery picks with high talent? The most talent in the past draft is Drew Gooden and unfortunately for him, he was drafted by the Grizzlies. I'll end on this note: I am a Bulls fan, so I am forced to cheer for "Jay" Williams. Unlike all the other basketball posers, I didn't jump ship when Jordan left the team. Seriously clueless. For some reason, he spares Dunleavey his criticisms while roasting Jay Williams... which is just beyond idiotic. And, yes... wonder if that Rocket selection of Yao Ming is still dumb-founding to our friend in Indiana. Don't you just get the feeling that around 7:30 (half-time) last night, this guy was busy calling his editor going... "PLEASE PLEASE hold off on that column I wrote yesterday! Whaddya MEAN it's already gone to the presses!!"
Could this be a joke? Did he seriously suggest that Mike Dunleavy Jr. should have been drafted above Ming and Williams? It has to a be a joke, right? I can't imagine ANYONE getting paid to make comments as asinine as these unless he was being very sarcastic.
This S(c)am King must be a total moronic idiot, and I'm sorry 2 offend all moronic idiots of the world!!! This dude is really clueless!
Only an Idiot would care who this guy is. And we all know that Rocket fans aren't idiots, so say good bye to this thread.
Whether the guy is an idiot or a jerk or whatever, I'm kind of surprised to see such poor writing in the Indiana Statesman. I'm not an avid reader of their paper, but I previously had a high opinion developed from other pieces I had read. Maybe most of the article was left on the cutting room floor, but what we have here is a rambling, pointless little rant that has very little backing up any of its claims. Half his points aren't even intelligle -- what's up with his beef with the name 'Jay'? Is he insulted that Jay changed his name?
Yeah, I bet this guy wants to draft Hot Sauce from the And1 videos and trade Ming for 'High Octane', another and1 baller. What an idiot.
Interestingly this piece was written by Sam King before the game last night. Be curious to know what he thinks of YAO ming now. I bet he wrote this piece thinking that Shawn Broadway would expose Yao so that he can gloat today. Sorry Sam - assume the position (see below)
I do not want to post his e-mail because he is a college student writing for a college newspaper, but you can find it by going to http://www.indstate.edu/ and clicking directory
