Obviously, the list favors recent players. But look at the top ten:

    Code:
    1	Shaquille O'Neal $191,614,005
    2	Kevin Garnett $147,413,420
    3	Alonzo Mourning $129,279,900
    4	Patrick Ewing *$123,843,120
    5	Chris Webber $121,242,500
    [b]6	Juwan Howard $118,238,700[/b]
    7	David Robinson *$118,135,623
    8	Scottie Pippen *$109,862,430
    9	Dikembe Mutombo $108,738,924
    10	Karl Malone *$106,468,378

This is probably the only career stat Juwan Howard cracks the top 100 all-time.

I think Juwan is severly underpaid. Dude is worth atleast 200 million.

He so belongs on that list.

Good thread durvasa. What's most startling is that only 3 of those guys have rings. Ridiculous money abounds, but I don't begrudge Robinson or Shaq a penny. I should give Karl(a) some slack but I won't. And Pippen, I simply can't be objective about.

Most of know Dream was horribly underpaid, especially early in his career and that's why... never mind.

Damn, the 3 thru 6 guys on that list probably has only one HOFer on it, all the others are locks.

That's not right at all. I never knew he got paid 20+ million a season once. I'm guessing it was Weisbrod who gave him that ridiculous contract?

Nah, he got it from his first team, the Washington Wizards (then, Bullets).

He just came off a decent second year in which he made the Allstar East squad and got All NBA third team honors. Because he played 41 minutes a game that year and he got an inordinate amount of touches (since Chris Webber was injured most of the season), his stats were inflated. The Bullets thought they had a superstar on their hands, and they gave him a ridiculous contract. His PER that season was 17.0, which is just above average but nothing particularly special.

This shows a run down of his career, salary vs. PER (where league avg PER is 15.0 every season). For giggles, I'll include Duncan's numbers as well:

    Code:
    	    Juwan Howard Tim Duncan
    	--------------------------- --------------------
    	Team	Salary PER	Salary PER
    1995	WAs	$1,309,000	15.0
    1996	WAS	$1,702,000	17.0
    1997	WAS	$9,750,000	16.1
    1998	WAS	$11,250,000	15.2	$2,967,840	22.6
    1999	WAS	$13,125,000	17.1	$3,412,000	23.2
    2000	WAS	$15,000,000	12.3	$3,858,240	24.8
    2001	WAS/DAL	$16,875,000	16.0	$9,660,000	23.8
    2002	DAL/DEN	$18,750,000	15.8	$10,865,250	27.0
    2003	DEN	$20,152,000	17.2	$12,072,500	26.9
    2004	ORL	$4,917,000	15.6	$12,676,125	27.1
    2005	HOU	$5,408,700	13.0	$14,260,641	27.0
    	--------------------------- --------------------
    total $118,238,700	15.5	$69,773,596	25.3

Juwan's agent should get an MVP....that is ridiculous $ for a very, very average player.

Either that or the owner or the GM should get an upper cut for approving a very, very bad contract...there's only handful of players who are worth max money...Juwan is/was not one of them.

I wonder how much Hakeem the 89-95 variant would be worth in that period where KG can get a $126 mil contract...

Funny how the list is dominated by big men.

There isn't a single guard on the list.

    Where's Kobe, Iverson, MJ, etc.?

    I feel sorry for Howard.

People forget that when he got that contract he was one of the premier 4 men in the L. Sure he got a ridicolous contract but at the time it was market value, and yes his agent served him nicely. :)

You cant blame him for taking what he was offered...we all would of the done the same :D :D

He has never ever had a chance in hell of living up to that salary, but he's been serviceable. Personally i'd like 2 see him be serviceable somewhere other than Houston, but you cant blame him for that either.

That list simply proves that Juwon is the greatest conman in NBA history...I admire his skills, the boy knows how to get that money.

You are the mother of empathy if you feel sorry for a guy who's made $118 mil at the age of 33.

Thats the 2nd thing that came to my mind after Howard. Interesting information though. Didn't realize Jordan didn't make too much money for a few years, even though his endorsements caught him up. i like the Hall of Fame stat that they have on players.

Howard can only dream of achieving the things that Mutombo did.

4-time Defensive Player of the Year. Winner and perennial contender for rebounding and blocked shots titles in his prime.

Mutombo may not have been a big offensive force, but I'd take his offense from his prime years over Howard's defense any time.

I think Riley, the heat's coach playd some role in it too. Miami did not get him because mourning's big mouth. Miami should appreciate his big mouth, sure they did by giving mouring a spot.

    4. Tim Duncan - 25.31
    5. Charles Barkley - 24.63
    6. Tracy McGrady - 24.14
    7. Magic Johnson - 24.12
    8. Karl Malone - 23.86

Well said. You got to give his agent a lot of credit.

Juwon basically got that contract from Pat Riley. Riles made a huge offer but it was refused by the league as it put Miami over the cap. I think they had just signed PJ Tucker and expected to be able to sign both. When the NBA voided the 2nd contract (Howard) Polan (Washington) stepped in and basically matched it, in fact he may have gone up a bit. But Riley is the one who established the price.

I also remember a qute from Riley after he lost Howard, being something to the effect of he 'would lay down and bleed for a bit, but he would be back'. Riley was all torn up by the mistake. How lucky can one guy be. First he takes over a stacked Lakers team, then gets saved from his own foolishness.

Personally I think Pat Riley is one of the worst (high profile) GMs ever. Look at all the bad contracts he signed. Brian grant and Eddie Jones both come to mind. He may have signed Glen Rice to that contrract we had to pay to get out of. And he signed Shawq to a huge five year contract. It looks good now, but I see the last two years as being an absolute albatross.
