We had this discussion earlier in the summer but now that we know more -- will we be able to make any noise in the offseason? I'm not sure it really matters because the class looks pretty lean this year with no real stand our guards. It seems like the most attractive would be Jason Terry.
Supposedly we have all the contracts we can handle for some time to come. Tmac and Yao take up a bunch of cap space. Nikestrad is the real guru on this subject, but next year we will only have the MLE and vet minimum. Ditto for about 10 years.
Easier said than done. The last time I checked, we're about as close to the luxury tax zone as we can get without paying it. Les isn't exactly a Cuban-esque owner with an endless amount of money.
Tmac should re-do his deal so we can get some ample help. I mean c'mon he has his own jet I think he can afford to lose a couple million.
http://www.geocities.com/micah1j/ We have a little room under the luxury cap - about 9M but that is considering we don't make any trades to take on more salary (trade our expiring contracts).
Thanks micah1j, I was looking for that link you posted in a thread a few weeks earlier. EDIT: Oops, it looks like it IS possible, but not anytime soon. Deals can't be renegotiated until three years have passed since the signing of the contract, but only if the contract is 4 years or more. Since he signed an extension last season, does that mean he's not allowed to renegotiate for a while? Or since he only signed a 3-year extension, and is technically still playing out his existing contract, does that mean he can still renegotiate? I need a bit of help from NIKEstrad or aelliot. I'm just curious...it's not like I actually expect McGrady to take less money.
Contracts can't be renegotiated downward unless this is a new feature of the CBA (highly unlikely). Further, a superstar in his prime taking an unneeded paycut would be unprecedented and thoroughly unrealistic. I credit Dawson for a creating a situation where we're out of albatross contracts (save potentially Juwan Howard) at the end of the year. It may in fact be possible to judiciously use the MLE next year, and considering the past three years have netted us Wesley (J. Jackson), Sura, and Swift through the MLE process, that's pretty good. Some of our flexibility hinges on Derek Anderson - if he's good, we're going to need to use our MLE on him, and that will take us out of the running for serious free agents.
Good points on DA. I can totally see us next year use our MLE on DA again assuming he plays well this year. He has a lot of incentive to play well. Also, for those interested in V-Span, to sign him we would hve to dip into our MLE monies as well. And he probably will be looking for something in the 2.5/3M range. So if V-Span blows up in Europe this year we could be looking at using the FULL MLE on DA/V-Span next offseason.
our front court is set to contend for the next two years. DA might prove to we worthy of starting at the 2. with either wesley or JB backing him up. all we need is a PG to push us over the top. we have to hope that vspan, jay will, or the MLE next year can work out in our favor.
