Dang, you would think that the first lesson you learn when holding a gun is to always aim it DOWN and AWAY. At least that's what my common sense tells me, since I've never actually fired a gun before.

it would also be not to have it loaded unless you're ready to use it..

I hope there is life insurance for the husband. Sad news indeed.

    Very sad.

If you are showing the weapon to someone, always remove magazine, clear chamber, recheck chamber, finger always off the trigger.

What if it wasn't an accident? Seems like a convenient story...especially since common sense would say to have the gun unloaded in such a scenario - and as others pointed out, one of the first lessons would be to never have it aimed at a human unless you intend to shoot.

I was thinking the same thing. We're talking about a soldier here, so the whole "safety first" comes to mind. Surely a trained soldier couldn't be that careless right? At worst, I'm thinking this is a cover up story by the wife. Maybe her husband didn't show her how to use it and in her drunken state, she took his gun, played around and accidentally shot him. Am I reaching? Perhaps, but like they say, stranger things have happened.

    It's spelled "soldier" not "solider."

But yes, this is extremely sad news.

What was that soldier's head doing anywhere near the gun or vice versa?

That would be an interesting deal if there was an ulterior motive. Aside from that, holy crap that's sad.

If this is truly what went down, it is a tragedy and my sympathies are with the family.

However, like many of you, something doesn't seem right here. I've never held a gun in my life, but even I know that you treat EVERY gun as if it's loaded. That means muzzle pointing down, finger off the trigger, safety on. Unless they were completely drunk, I don't see how this happened.

Also, any trained soldier who decides at 1:30 in the morning after drinking that it would be a good time for gun lessons has some questionable judgment to begin with, and should maybe consider another profession.
