Sacramento Bee: Houston a dark horse for Artest trade

This was in the Sacramento Bee:

As for other possibilities, a dark, dark, darkhorse is Houston. I say that only on intrigue alone - Artest with former Kings coach Rick Adelman again, not to mention Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming and a pairing with Bonzi Wells that worked so well during the 2006 playoff run?!

The Rockets are on the playoff bubble, although they've won 11 of their last 12 games. To my knowledge, the two teams have not spoken. As for what the Kings would want, I can tell you that they are very high on Rockets rookie point guard Aaron Brooks out of Oregon. How high? There was some internal talk in June about shocking the NBA world and drafting Brooks at the No. 10 spot. He was taken 26th overall by the Rockets.
One trade that I'd have to think would make Geoff Petrie do back flips: Artest for Brooks, the expiring contract of Steve Francis ($2.4 million) and rookie forward Luis Scola ($2.9 million and signed through 2010).

No way would I do this trade. Maybe if Artest was signed long term, but you can not give up two promising players for a guy who in all likelihood will be gone next year.

If they do really want Brooks that bad, then I would consider the deal subbing in Bonzi for Scola. Sacramento still gets cap room and Artest coming probably cuts into some of Bonzi's minutes anyway.

It would be a scary lineup though. Artest and Battier, not to mention Hayes would be the best defensive lineup in the league. It would leave us thin at PG, so James would have to learn to play again or else Rafer would be another 40 min playoff player.

I want Artest, but not enough to give up Scola.

Now,I see AB's ceiling as being even higher than Luis, but if Artest was signed sealed and delivered on that contract with a deal for a PG in the works,I'd pull the trigger.

Scola is untouchable...end of story! I would however do a Artest + Beno for Brooks + Francis + Snyder + Hayes swap!

No way do we give up Scola. Brooks I'd be ok with parting provided we can find another backup PG on the market to replace him.

no way! scola and ab are not leaving this team. now if this was mike james + snyder + 1st rounder. yeah i'll do that. Possibly entice both artest and bonzi to come back next year for long term. Losing a first round pick thats low anyways sucks, but we could always buy another top 2nd rounder and draft another landry/novak.

...ok, the buying a 2nd round pick argument isnt strong if i included novak, but you get what i'm saying. :p

    Just say no.

Brooks and Scola are going to be the core of this team down the road and already are paying dividends know. Chemistry is at an all time high

Well, okay then. Not even a rumor at this point. Thanks for the not-good thoughts.

I'm not the smartest man in the world, but to get artest, shane is the 1st to go. Shane and artest makes the same money, but artest is a better player by far. He changes the dynamic of the team with his great defense and reliable offense. Not to mention the toughness he has.

The next thing is maybe working out a deal for him before the conpletion of the trade. Top that off, you might have to take either a injured SAR or Kenny Thomas.Either way, artest put the rox on another level.

Given our depth at PF with Landry and Hayes, we could afford to make this trade. It would leave us with:

    Alston / James
    TMAC / Head
    Artest / Battier
    Landry / Hayes
    Yao / Deke

Could Artest shut down potential playoff threats such as Kobe, Nowitzki, Ginobili or even Lebron/Paul Pierce if we get that far? I know he'd help out.

Chemistry appears to be very strong at the moment, however. It would be tough to disrupt that with arguably the league's most volatile player (Artest).

I dont think the Kings have given up on the season yet. Thats why they would at least want Bonzi if Scola wasnt in the deal. Bonzi could help them win games, Snyder could not. Plus Bonzi would expire just like Snyder would at the end of the season.

our biggest weaknesses were pg and pf - why would we trade away those positions for a sf/sg when we have t-mac and bonzi?

You are right, you are not the smartest man in the world. I guarantee you the Rox do not want to give up Shane for Artest. Battier is signed for multiple years at a somewhat reasonable deal. Artest is likely gone after this season or will demand so much money the Rox couldnt sign him with yao and Tmac on the team.

I dont think the Rox would even consider trading Shane away to have Artest in a Rox uniform for 30 games and a playoff run. I honestly dont see any scenario where Yao, Tmac, Battier, Scola or Landry gets traded.
