http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4237317.html Well, that's one way of staying on the roster. Stay injured for the duration of pre-season so your team can't cut you
I assume his contract is guaranteed, so it would be a different situation. They have to pay him regardless.
IMHO Rybo will be paid...not to play. He is a cut ready to happen. (He could be re-signed later in year tho.)
I agree, and if you consider 13 roster spots full as JVG indicated than the following are more than likely a lock. Yao, Tmac, Battier, Bonzi, Alston, Deke, JHO, Snyder, Vspan, Novak, JLIII, Chucky, Head Which means JVG has already thrown Bowen in the pool of players to be cut. Casey, Bowen, Azubuike, Haryasz, Padgett And with his injury he is almost definitely on the firing line contract or no contract. Jvg has talked of even carrying only 14 players so that means there will only be 1 roster spot open for those guys. Casey, Bowen and Azubuike are all vying for the backup duty at the 2 or 3 but with the signing of Bonzi that spot is all but vanished. So unless 1 of them has an amazing training camp they are all headed for the door. Padgett seems to be Novak lite ala redundant so he in all likelihood will be cut. And our most glaring weakness is a backup big which I am not sure if Haryasz can fill but if he has a decent training camp/preseason he just might get that final spot. And if not look for the Rockets to make a trade at the end of camp or at least try to pick up a big off the wire. If JVG does decide to carry 15 than I think Casey is the 15th roster spot because of his 3 point shooting and the fact that his contract is partially guaranteed. So our final Roster on opening day could be this... Yao, Tmac, Battier, Bonzi, Alston, Deke, JHO, Snyder, Vspan, Novak, JLIII, Chucky, Head, Haryasz Not bad, I would say we are deeper younger, more atletic and a much better shooting squad than last year. Not the perfect squad but not bad considering everyone was screaming bloody murder after we lost Mike James. Edit: I forgot to mention Sura who isn't even in camp and IMO is already cut but may actually be on the opening roster because of a rule that allows the Rockets to pick up a medical exception if he is on the team after december or something. So that may be why JVG says they may only carry 14.
I really doubt Haryasz will make the roster. Tmac has already mentioned Jacobsen as a improvement for the Rox so many times so most likely he wont be cut. Also Padgett has experience and he played great with the Rox so should make the roster as well. Knowing Gundy, he does not like too many unproven players.
I could see a Novak of even a JLIII opening the season in the NBADL. Let them get some minutes while we see how good everybody else is and set the rotations. If all those two guys accomplish this year is to be good enough to make the rotation next year, I'll be trhilled.
Rybo should do a Dionne Warwick, and then get the Psychic Friends network to tell him that he has no future on this team.
i see no point in keeping both padgent and Novak. Neither are great at defense, they both can shoot, they are simlar in height. I gove the advantage to Novak because he is younger, so there is no reason to have Padgett on the team. If the rockets dont keep him for the year, nobody else will. Doesnt that say enough about his value? Also, regarding Harasz. i think he should make the team and get a chance to play. They deseratly need some height on this team and just having a big body to throw in the game for a few minutes would be more useful than having Pagett sit on the bench. But since van gundy likes him, I think the last spot (#15) will be between him and casey jacobson
At the end of last season, JVG said Bowen "is going to have to find a way to stay in this league". So, the long, romantic weekends in the Poconos are greatly exaggerated, I would think.
Padgett will make the team. He knows the system and JVG is familiar with him; Novak and Jacobsen and Haryasz do not. That is a HUGE advantage if you want to play for the rockets.
LOL, not sure how you can say that considering the career achievements of the guys he's potentially "replacing" amounts to zero and you've never seen them play in a rockets uniform.
Unfortunately, Rybo is one of the players many here love to rip. Considering we'll play 8-9 guys in the rotation, the 14th/15th players on the team will rarely be activated (much less play) and are really nothing more than practice fodder. It may be that Rybo is excellent practice fodder and that is his role on the team. I'm fine with that. But I have a feeling he's going to be cut in favor of a developmental guy like Azubuike, Haryasz or Jacobsen.
I don't care what RyBo does, as long as it means he's watching from the stands and not watching from the bench.
ummm, he was a rotation player for the Rockets during his last stint, and he did achieve this. http://www.clutchfans.net/recaps_list.cfm?RecapsSeason=2005 Rockets 82, Hornets 77 January 26, 2005 at New Orleans Arena Padgett Pops Hornets: Reserve forward hits huge three to break tie, Rockets rattle Hornets 82-77 Rockets 92, Knicks 91 January 21, 2005 at Madison Square Garden Padgett Nails Buzzer Beater!: Reserve forward hits runner as time expires, Rockets knock off Knicks in Garden
imo rybo will be cutted. padgett and jacobson make the roster, but ungarenteed. haryasz and Azubuike will be in d league.
In addition to the 2 games listed by Sam, Padgett was also instrumental in the famous comeback against the Spurs. He made a steal and subsequent basket, and was later the defender who helped cause the turnover that led to McGrady's winning basket. The guy isn't a starter, but he's definitely more than a career benchwarmer.
This is funny. Ryan Bowen of all people purposefully sitting out of practice. The single guy who works harder in practice than anyone else. Yeah, I see that happening. Here's a fact: Ryan Bowen has a guaranteed contract. What this means: The 14th/15th spot is his to lose. If someone clearly outplays him this preseason, he will be cut and that person given a roster spot. But the onus is on the guys with the non-guaranteed contracts.
