Well it is a disaster. No news there. What about the oppression in China especially with Tibet? Yea they are ones to talk. Whatever.

Methinks maybe the Bear and the Dragon have no room to stand. Even with our last 12 Presidents' horrible record on Civil Liberties and property rights, we are still among the top 10 most free countries in the world, as measured by indepent agencies. China and Russia are often ranked among the bottom 10. If our elected officials would obey their Congressional oath, we'd be number 1 (which should be our goal), but people with glass kingdoms shouldn't throw stones.

hy·poc·ri·sy /hɪˈpɒkrəsi/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[hi-pok-ruh-see] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
    –noun, plural -sies.

    1. a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.
    2. a pretense of having some desirable or publicly approved attitude.
    3. an act or instance of hypocrisy.

To the best of my knowledge(which is basically American news), neither China nor Russia ever bother to put up much of a facade of being virtuous countries. At least not nearly to the extent of US.

In another words, they may be a-holes, but at least they admit it.

It is telling to me that these countries get their hackles up and try to 'attack back' when poked, while the USA is content to let these governments say what they want.

    To quote Bill Shakes,

These nations aren't really in a position to do much complaining about us, but since Bush's policies of torture, reduced civil liberties for Americans, starting wars etc. The U.S. really isn't on the moral high ground anymore either.

    That's the real shame.

I think some posters here may have missed the point. Both countries are responding to U.S. criticism of their human rights records, so they felt obliged to fire back and 'expose' what they see as U.S. hypocrisy. I don't think either of them is claiming that they're 'bastions of liberty,' they just don't appreciate being lectured about it, considering the 'messenger' in this case.

If it was the Netherlands or Sweden, then may be they wouldn't have had much of a 'comeback.' I think it just highlights how much the U.S. image has changed over the last few years.

Exactly, and that is one of the things that America has lost due to GW Bush. We don't have the high ground to perch on and call out other nations that use torture, and curtail civil liberties that we once had.

China has been responding with a 'comeback' like clockwork since the annual list was first legally required by Congress in 1961.

They're obviously 'touchy' about the subject, and for good reason (i.e. their human right record sucks donkey balls).

For the record, I am not saying that the U.S. = China in the human rights arena, I am saying that we gave them ammunition to fire back with...it's regrettable.

For people that don't understand the meaning of hypocrisy, maybe the following story will clarify what's going on.

Chris Paul (U.S.) says to Bowen (Russia and China) "you are the dirtiest player in the world". Bowen says "what, you took a shot at a guys nuts".

What we should feel bad about is that we used to be some one more upstanding instead of Paul.

And we can't blame it all entirely on Bush. We elected him twice, and there are more than enough people that support his hypocritical policies for him to continue in spite of protests and legal action.

Now there might be some policies that could be argued as absolute necessities for our defense, but his ineptitude and open brazenness in carrying them out leaves us and our legacy far less moral standing to champion our values than ever before.

Just another **** stain from the last 7 years for future presidents to clean.

what's hard for me to defend is the % of adults we incarcerate in this country, and how that number grows.... how we keep building more and bigger prisons.

I don't think that says anything good, and we have a greater % in prison than China or Russia, right?

But otherwise, having travelled some, I can say we are incredibly free and I love it. We just need to get more free of our living rooms and TVs! :)
