It's a nice move in anticipation of the Halo release. The 360 sales number were awful last quarter. Pricedrop did wonders for sony though so I'm sure we'll see a big improvement here.

    What were they last quarter?

I don't think there have been any numbers to say whether it did wonders yet. I don't expect it to be flying off the shelves at 499 and I don't expect the 360 to see much of a jump with 50 bucks off either.

In the US, they sold 174K, 155K, and 198K during the last 3 months (the last month had an extra week of sales IIRC). He may have referred to global shipments of 360s though, which weren't very good either (700K IIRC).

He's probably referring to Sony commenting on how PS3 sales have more than doubled at the top 5 retailers since the price drop. I'd rather wait until we get NPD numbers for July (and maybe August) before coming to a conclusion on how much of an impact the price cut had though...that may have been what you were saying (let's wait for the "real" numbers).

Why did Microsoft implement the Elite 360 model with only the HDMI 1.2 specification when PS3 supports HDMI 1.3?

I'm just curious. Isn't this basically admitting that XBox 360 will never support the newer HD audio formats because those are on the HDMI 1.3 spec? From my understanding, they will never be able to pass those HD audio formats to the receiver for the receiver to decode and play. PS3 can pass. Stand-alone HD players on the 1.3 spec can pass em. XBox 360 cannot.

Why did Bill Gates do this?

    surf,
we're first trying to get people to buy hdtvs. getting a receiver that decodes hd audio and having speakers and decent sub.
what part of the population is that?
    TMac? Matress Mac?

well...i just bought a new Onkyo receiver that supports those HD audio formats requiring the HDMI 1.3 spec and I'm set for the HDTV. So, the answer is...ME ME ME ME ME ME!

Dolby Digital audio will suffice. However, I know a screwover by MS when I see one.

It's really a moot point. I'm just looking for stuff to complain about...dammit.

    :D

I never planned on getting a 360 since I don't really play video games anymore. I always said, though, that I'd probably get one when Halo 3 came out. If they do drop the price and the bankroll is going well, I just might have to get one for Halo.

I have a rather small media room (14' x 14'). I currently have a Klipsch matched 5.1 speaker system, a 50" JVC D-ILA HDTV, and a recently purchased Onkyo SR-605 a/v receiver that just came out a few months back. It's got built in decoding for the HD audio formats. True Dolby HD is a mandatory format for HD DVD. A player should be able to decode it and/or pass the signal to a receiver that can. Yet, Microsoft decided that wasn't important for the foreseeable future (pricks). The HD audio is the exact same studio master bit-for-bit in all its glory. Yet, Bill Gates decided I can't enjoy that with the XBox 360...even with the Elite model. Mr. Advocate for technological advancement my ass. :D

FIX THE DAMN 360 HD DVD PLAYER, MICROSOFT!

Do you know which drives console sales more, great exclusive games or price drops? I'm the type of person who only buy new consoles if I *have* to play a new game, but don't have the console yet. Is this way of thinking the norm or the exception?

IMO, price matters more than great exclusive games, generally speaking. For example, the 360 and even the PS3 have had some great exclusive games already (360 more so than PS3 of course), but they haven't really helped sales that much for either system due to their high prices.

Of course, it takes a combination of great games, an affordable price tag, and a number of other factors for a console to sell well. FWIW, I tend to think like you do (great games will sell a system to me, almost regardless of price), but it doesn't seem like most gamers think that way IMO (probably hardcore vs casual gamers, or something like that).

I see. Maybe the whole "casual gaming" thing is becoming more popular, as evident by the reign of DS/Wii on the console market right now.

    Here's my question:

I got the extended warranty through MicroCenter when I bought mine awhile back. Something I never do, but decided to because of the problems I heard about. Now that XBOX is extending the warranty, does MY extended warranty get tacked on to the end of that????
