...and your price drop. I would be surprised to find this real. Or, at least, something Sony wanted leaked to the public this soon. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26704
Ya I don't believe this. Maybe they mean 60GB PS3's with the Emotion Engine chip. Seriously, it can't be legit.
Yeah, I kinda agree. But gi is, i thought, a fairly legit site. Looking around, and the article is spreading through all the forums. There's also some video interview with Kaz Hirai floating around that, translated, is him saying they are no longer in production of the 60GB and that when it is gone they are back to the 599 sku only. So I dunno.
I guess it could be true. Sony has done crazier things. Was the 60GB price drop just a tool to get a quick influx of systems out to the public? Or... Maybe this leak was on purpose to get consumers to snap up the systems before they disappear? Maybe when most of the systems are gone Sony will change its mind due to "high demand" and continue selling the 60GB. While having moved lots of units in the process.
Possibly. That would be pretty underhanded though. Sony actually had a good E3, with some good buzz on some games, along with the price drop of 100 bucks. 500, IMO, is still more than most people will probably pay for a system but at least it was a start. Then this stuff (if true) happens. Then there's the Motorstorm pack...if they plan on phasing the current model out, will they then, whenever the 60 GB is gone, move the 80 GB to 500 bucks without the game packed in? If so, who will buy the 60GB with this knowledge out there? Why would suddenly knowing the one with less hard drive space is going to be discontinued create a rush of people who 'have to have it before it's gone'? And if that 80GB price cut doesn't happen, then your price point goes right back up to $600. That's two systems phased out and one (maybe two) 'price drops' in less than a year from release. Your average joe on the street is going to see that primarily. What a mess. Who knows. Maybe it was all just a misunderstanding. Or maybe the SCEE president is trying to get fired.
Eh, as a stockholder, the PS3 madness really hasn't much impact on their stock since they are doing pretty well in the other areas. the PS1 and PS2 were great consoles, but the PS3 is repeating some of the same mistakes as sega and the sega saturn, which is kind of ironic because the sega genesis at one point was more popular than nintendo, but when the expensive saturn came out, it got beat out by the more consumer friendly... playstation?
It uses a combination of hardware and software emulation. The PS2's CPU (the emotion engine) is emulated by Cell, while the PS2's GPU is still in the PS3 (or at least hardware that acts very much like it). It provides pretty good backwards compatibility, but not as good as those with a full-hardware solution. I'll have to look more into to this later on, but right now, I wouldn't really be too worried about this. 80GB HDDs are either cheaper or the same price as 60GB HDD, so Sony naturally wouldn't mind switching over to using just that SKU (more value for consumer, same/less costs for them). Factor in that they'll eventually want to stop producing PS3s with the EE (the PS2's CPU) altogether, and it seems clear as to why they would no longer offer the 60GB SKU (this is a nice way to know if a PS3 has a EE too). I'm pretty sure this idea was thrown out back when the 80GB SKU appeared months ago, although I don't know if I mentioned it again in recent threads. It is basically what I thought would happen, although maybe not quite so soon. I don't quite understand some of the things Reeves is saying (or why he is even saying them to begin with). Stock of the 60GB PS3 will certainly not be gone by the end of July, unless he's referring to Sony's own stock that they sell to retailers; IOW, production of the 60GB SKU will stop soon, if it hasn't already...basically what Kaz said I guess.
The word around the block is the 80 gig is replacing the 60 gig at $499. If you look on the box, the 80 gig Motorstorm pack is LE. Capcom's boss is probally right about Sony announcing another price cut later this year. 80 gig sku with improved bluetooth antenna, ee'less chip, and possible shockaxis for $499.
wouldnt be the first time sony has done shady activities like that. I can never trust them and any of their overpriced products
We get it, your a stealth troll. Stop b*tching and moaning about purchasing a 360 and do it already (you probally already have one). I'm sure anyone keeping up with the gaming threads know you have a bias against Sony and this reconfirms it. Wah~ Sony spit in your kool-aid and everyone on a basketball forum needs to know. WELL, since you brought up pricing.... PS3 - $499. + memory card reader Xbox 360 - $399, well $479 for the Elite with HDMI and 120 gig HD. Add $199 for the HD-DVD add on and $100 for Wifi. $479 + $199 + $100 = $778. + hdmi cables + headset? Who is overpriced now?
wow. easy fanboy! holy ****...where did that come from? ANd actually, i didnt even mention the ps3 directly, i was kind of talking about sony as a whole. get back on your meds dude. Go chill at at "Home" or something
wii, with a game and an actualy controller with rumble...$250 btw, i dont want an elite. i dont want an HD-DVD, i dont want wifi. I also will wait until they drop the price this fall...so what do you say about that? can you say $299
I can't believe people are buying the ps3 on this Sony gimick.. Remember when the Sonly PS3 came out?? 40Gb Version for $499 60Gb Versino for $599 They decide to stop selling the 40 Gb? Stupid move Then they decide to lower the price of the 60GB version by $100 but only till they come out with a 80Gb Version.. People that is still $499 and $599 Only thing that changed was 20GB lol what a joke.... Smartest thing they could of done was kept the 40Gb version and lowered the price to $399.. That would have eaten up the competition....And then offered a external HD.. I mean sheesh you can buy a 500 GB external HD for your pc for less $125 dollars.... HD size shouldn't be a factor anymore... If you can build a credit card reader for the ps3 then damn yes you can build a external HD. Stupid Sony!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yea good point... I dont even use my consoles to watch movies on. And I don't need wifi. Anyway you look at it, the ps3 is still overpriced. Just because I get a bunch of crap that I'm not gonna use (and I didn't use when I had one) doesn't mean its not overpriced. I will get a PS3 though, but not until MGS4 comes out, and thats only if it is exclusive.
the ps3 is an impressive piece of technology, its parts add up to well over $600, but i agree with you. I want some customization. I never used a console to play movies...i actually kind of things its cheesy, for some reason. i may get one someday too, but it will be well into 2008 early 09 if i do. as of right now? it just isnt offering enough in terms of games and im not even a big turismo fan (good game but wont make me buy a console), never liked Final fantasy (snooze fest ) and never got into metal gear for whatever reason.
It's interesting...has there ever been a console out there that's elicited as big of a emotional response as the PS3? There people out there who'll do nothing but abuse the system, the company that created it, and anyone who owns one. It's as if it's a symbol of the evil corporate ideology that big bad corporation Sony intends to ram down our throats On the other side, there are people who'll take any negative comment about the system personally, and passionately defend it to the death. In this case, it's a wonderful, innovative, machine that's capable of improving the quality of life and turning our world into some sort of utopia You just gotta love all the dichotomous issues in the world today: abortion, stem cell research, the war on terror, and of course...the PlayStation3.
Jesus, dude. We knew you were the uber-Sony Fanboy on the site, but relax. Anyone who makes that kind of comparison is misguided. IF you want all that crap, then yes, your comparison makes sense. Most people don't want all of that. Most people like the option of buying or not buying that stuff, depending on need. Does Xbox Live's value (minus the $5 a month) over the PSN, and the 360 gigantic & qualitatively better game library add or subtract from that value? It's all relative. We know you would cut off your left nut for Sony, and that you hate Microsoft. Okay? Some of us don't care. Objectively, the 360 is the best overall console platform/value out there RIGHT NOW. But who cares? Some people want a Wii, b/c it's fun. Some people want the PS3 for the BR, other features, and its potential. It's all good. Quit having a coronary whenever anyone "slights" the precious PS3 or Sony.
