09:57 DOLLAR GETS LIFT BY UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMOR OF BIN LADEN CAPTURE-TRADERS -- Reuters 01/22 10:16A (RT)*U.S. OFFICIAL SAYS NO TRUTH TO MARKET RUMOR OSAMA BIN LADEN CAPTURED
Looks like it was only a rumor among currency traders that he was caught. They reported it on a German radio station as if it was actually a fact, but I was sceptical already which is why I wrote "rumor"... apparently, the news agency Reuters sent it across the ticker, but so far no confirmation, I looked at their homepage and several other international news pages. My gut feeling is it is only an unfounded rumor that originated somewhere among those currency traders. If that is true, sorry about the false alarm.
The rumor started because there was going to be a major announcement this morning concerning the war on terrorism. So everyone assumed it was something like Bin Laden capture. Turns out it's just a US/Saudi press conference.
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=4186989 U.S. Official: No Truth to Rumor Bin Laden Captured Thu January 22, 2004 10:25 AM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - There is no truth to a rumor in the foreign exchange markets that al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has been captured, a U.S. official said on Thursday. "It's not true," the official said when asked about the rumor. U.S. forces have been hunting for bin Laden since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America that were blamed on al Qaeda.
There have been tons of rumors about Osama being caught and I'm not going to believe them until I see him in an orange jumpsuit. I don't think he will be caught alive.
Some a$$hole was probably buying calls on US dollars and everyone in the marketplace is so sensitive that they listen to anything. Damn! Would be nice though! The problem is that I've been to North Pakistan years ago mountain climbing and i've seen the terrain. It is so treacherous and is filled with underground caves and mountainous people that have no idea what century it is. How can you find someone in that kind of terrain?? Either that or how can you find a body under a mountain destroyed by a daisy cutter bomb?? I'm weary we'll ever find this guy unless he grows some balls and tries to do a suicide mission himself instead of sending impressionable kids to do it.
That's what popped into my mind as well. Who profited from this? (sigh) You're dead on about the near impossibility of finding him in that region of Pakistan. Someone will have to betray him to catch him, in my opinion. And, as you said, most of those peoples lives haven't changed much for a couple of hundred years. Many of them still polish their British Enfields from the 19th century.
There has to be one mofo on the inside who is thinking about how great it would be to get that reward money
