I *seriously* doubt that, at least the 2nd paragraph where it claims the game is completely finished

the 1st paragraph, sure. you could be in the alpha stage of a game, or hell even pre-alpha, and still be able to show nice videos and trailers. but I just can't believe that FF13 is totally finished, I mean FF12 isn't even going to be released here until October, which means it's not near "finished". yes I realize the gameplay mostly is, but I consider localization to account for a game being finished as well

I am going to buy PS3 for sure IF it is finished... If they did finish it, they did a damn well job at keeping it a secret.

    I wouldn't be that surprised.

ff12 development was a debacle, and I'm sure they could've been almost done with another game halfway through the ff12 production.

Yeah, as CriscoKidd alluded to, they've probably had a team working on FF XIII for quite a while (FF XII was supposed to be out in 2004 IIRC). Plus, I think only a year separated FFIX and FFX, if that means anything.

I wouldn't doubt this news that much...if it was a PS2 title. The PS3 part kind of throws me off a bit. It just doesn't seem like they'd have enough time with PS3 devkits to be able to release the game anytime soon (assuming "close to being finished" actually means close to being finished).

FWIW, I'm assuming finished means ready to be released in Japan, not necessarily the US. Obviously, the localization process would delay things by quite a bit (and if FFXII, KH2, and FF7:AC are any indication, SE is pretty slow at localizing :().

    edit:FF XIII on PS3 vs Halo 3 on Xbox 360...coming March 2007:

Well, it being released for the PS3 doesn't necessarily mean that it was originally designed for the PS3, or even really even pushes the new PS3 tech all that much.

But with how great they are with graphic pimping, I'm sure they could make it look like a next gen game.

    ff12 is definitely single player.

highly doubt ff13 is an online game.

I think that would be a huge mistake if they went that route. Square-Enix would get absolutely slammed if FF13 was released as a PS2-only game, while only sporting PS2 graphics

and have no doubt, even as well as SE can do 'graphic pimping', there should be absolutely NO WAY that the best possible looking PS2 game should even be near a PS3 game

peleincubus, FF13 is a single player game from every indication. as crisco said, FF12 is definitely single player only, it's already been released in japan and asia

    <edit> that should read:

True. Although they'd still be looking at a ~30M userbase (in Japan) on the PS2 versus a 2M (probably at most) userbase (in Japan) for the PS3 if they released it within a year or so. It depends on a number of things, but if it was originally designed as a PS2 title, I don't see why'd they increase the costs of "porting up" to the PS3 and sell it to a smaller userbase. Hehe...as if the PS3 needed any more things to increase the eBay prices. :)

I suppose it would be possible that SE got one of the first devkits with a Cell processor (maybe around late 2004), and they've been working with it and various Nvidia SM3.0 cards (GF 6800, GF 7800, etc.) since then to give them an edge over other developers. It still wouldn't push the PS3 tech (even if it was a PS3 title all along), but I guess it could still look nice. If any of you guys have seen Virtua Fighter 5, that's running on a Pentium 4 (3.0 GHz) and a GF 6800, so I guess the game could still look quite nice even if it doesn't use Cell and RSX anywhere near their full potential.

I think the move (if the game delivers) would kill any chance for the 360 to do well in Japan. I think that's incentive enough for Sony to send another truckload of cash at Square's doorsteps.

Besides, RPG gamers in Japan aren't totally wrapped up in shiny graphics as gamers in the States.
