Unknown...not too many, for sure. I found Jackson's comments in today's chron interesting, although not much of a revelation: "Of course in the past they posted up and kicked it outside to shooters," Jackson said. "Now they do it with penetraters. But they always take on the characteristics of Rudy's game." ------------------
CALL FOR OLD HEADS back when Rudy played. . .Was he a Long range bomber like Bullard or a Gunner? Rocket River BTW Rudy ever play Phil on the court? ------------------
Is he talking about Rudy's game while he was a player? I didn't watch him, but from what I've heard, he was no defensive force. Didn't the Rockets hold LA to 74 points? Matching their lowest total since moving to LA? Maybe Phil was ONLY referring to Rudy's offensive style of play. ------------------
He was a mid-range bomber (a dieing breed) He made the bank shot an art form. I can still hear the announcers: RUDY T OFF THE GLASS...YES! Aaahhh, memories! ------------------ Save our children from the TAAS test: TAAS test report card TAAS test fact sheet
RocketRiver, I saw Rudy play and I can tell you who who looked like. Reggie Miller is the new Rudy. Rudy would run off 12 picks and then pull up with his deadly "J". That who I would compare Rudy's game to. ------------------
Also, rmenmber that the 3 point shot had not yet been adopted by the NBA yet so, there was really no gauge for his range at that time. ------------------
Rudy shot the majority of his shots from 15'- 18' on the baseline/wing, so the lack of the 3 pointer during his career is a nonissue. Phil's Rudy comment does not make sense. The only sense I can make of it is that Rudy played hard as a player and that Rudy as a coach gets his teams to play hard. ------------------
Except...remember the double overtime game against the Lakers when Rudy pulled up and shot (not heaved!) a 35 foot jump shot for the win? One of my fondest memories of the Rockets because that was at a time when we NEVER beat those Lakers. ------------------ Tom Archer www.sourcedna.com
Phil's quote makes sense. He's referring to RT's coaching style. It has always been the open man gets the ball. So, in Olajuwon's hey-day, we dumped it in to draw the double-team and then kicked out and moved to the open man. Now, we have penetrators drive to draw the double-team and then kick out and moved to the open man. I haven't yet seen it work as well as it did with Olajuwon in the post, but I think that's the strategy Phil's referring to. ------------------ RealGM Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/
