    Why not a poll?

I am convinced that JVG is not the right coach for this current Rockets team. He continues to harp on them not playing with passion and not covering the pick and roll well, or not coming out with energy.

We have been hearing the same things for 3 years? What about coming up with a better strategy for defending and covering up the team's weaknesses?

I think JVG is cagey, smart, subversive, arrogant, and myopic....he is a good coach, but IMHO, not a great one.

He is smart in that he bought the Red Rowdies tickets this year (A contract year), very smart.

I am sure he heard the fans last year starting to get on his case, and he knows that Les heard those same fans too...what better way to get fans on your side then by buying them free tickets? Smart. A small investment that could reap him a new contract and about $20 million dollars- smart !

JVG knows that his coaching style and persona are not the kind of things that excite the general public. Even in wins the guy whines about players not doing a good job, he is far too controlling for my taste.

I would LOVE to have Rudy T back, this team would explode under his guidance, he would have a good defense and a much more creative offense.

So, your thoughts, who is the better coach?

    Rudy or JVG?

    Post your thoughts, and why.

I think Rudy would get more out of this team than JVG....

Rudy was inspirational......JVG - well he is bald.

Sorry to say that each has their attributes but do not consider either good enough to be ranked ahead of each other.

Rudy was better in the old "illegal defense" days.

But since the rules changed, JVG is better.

A knee-jerk thread by Dakota after a loss. Who woulda ever guessed it?

I thought he was "growing on you"? Oh wait. That was during the win streak.

Ever read the book, "Good to Great"? In my opinion, JVG exhibits those characteristics.

I think by far Van Gundy is a superior coach by his ability to be prepared teams and exploiting matchups.

I think the bigger question should be whether Van Gundy is a better coach or is it Jerry Sloan.

I feel that Van Gundy will have surprise defensive assignments before we play Utah in the playoffs that will shock them like when he put Bowen/McGrady on Nowitzki. It took them at least a game to get over that.

Depends on the situation. When JVG took over this team, Rudy created a complete mess. The players controlled the team, not Rudy. It took somebody like JVG, to take back control. Rudy would of never blessed trading Francis & Mobley for TMAC. Probably would of kept Moochie dribbling in circles as well (LOL). Just my opinion, he never seemed exited about Yao Ming.

That being said, with the current squad, a players coach would probably do better then JVG style of play.

    So my voite would be:
Rockets 2007 - Rudy (or similar players coach), Rockets 2003 (??) - JVG

But as bad as the Rockets offense is at times, its JVG defensive mindset that is also winning games.

I would like to have neither, we always in this City have a problem moving on. when we trade a player we would want him back, eventhough there are hundreds more available and hundreds more will be soon. Same way with the coaches we need to move on. Hopefully the new coach we wouldn't make the mistak of giving him the KEYS to every thing that the organization owns and pretty much turn it into a dictatorship from drafs, bench players, rookies, contracts, ...

I voted Rudy by the way and I would want him back if we had no other option.

Rudy T is obviously the better coach. He has a better resume. He has the rings. He has the gold medal. All JVG has is a history of getting some teams to overachieve and outperform what everyone else could get.

But I voted for JVG for one reason alone. He had vision on how to use Yao. Yao came to the Rockets as a sweet-passing, jump shooting high post center. Rudy T utilized that. Yao was on his way to becoming the 7'6" Brad Miller (and I would have been happy with that). But JVG came and changed that. He saw that Yao could much better. He forced Yao to play in the low post. It was a fish-out-of-water experience at first, but JVG stuck with it. Yao picked it up fast (much credit owed Tom Thibodeau). Now Yao is the most unstoppable offensive force in the game. He is the biggest game-changer the Rockets have had since Hakeem. The credit goes to JVG's vision. For that reason, he's the best coach for the Rockets in my book.

I do like some things about him, but IMHO he is not a championship coach, I am getting tired of him whining about his team not being mentally tough or not covering the PnR well enough.

3 years JVG....THREE years...and he has not been able to come up with and effective scheme for the better teams.

Myopia Cabbage....catch it.....and why don't you vote, you big chicken !!!!

I just thought a poll would be more fun than talking about the Jazz game.

JVG appears to be better at X's and O's, but Rudy found a system that worked in his era, got his players to carry it out, and shoved it down the league's throat.

One thing that I liked about Rudy was the willingness to try giving a well-playing end of the bench player consistent minutes which would otherwise have gone to an under performing, though entrenched player in that position (e.g. Winston Garland for Sleepy Floyd or Eldridge Recasner for Kenny Smith).

Clearly the Rockets need a better strategy because they only have the first or second best defense in the league.

    Get riddy Rudy.
