You can use the following equation to evaluate Pat Riley's career of late :

Divsion title + Early Playoff Exit = FAILURE

Take it from Mr. T : "your post is just jibba jabba, fool!"

Well Karl has no business being ranked that high. Sloan, should definitely be behind Rudy. Sloan is inflexible, plays with the same system, and can't push the team over the brink no matter what. But in fairness, he does well doing what he does.

Phil Jackson, gets both unfair blame and credit for his wins. Yes it takes some good coaching to get the stars to co-exist and the Role Players to do their share. Phil is probably the best at that. But it's also true that Phil won't take on a rebuilding team, and won't try any other system other than Tex's triangle. Rudy, however, has gotten stars to co-exist, and role players to step up and accept their roles with the championship years, but isn't married to the same system and doesn't mind rebuilding with a young team.

Larry Brown, almost shuns coaching a team with a lot of super star talent, and loves rebuilding teams, and is excellent at it.

Riley, Doesn't take on rebuilding teams either. He takes talent layden teams every time. Also in '94 I think Rudy outcoached Riley, plain and simple.

So I think it's debatable who number 1 is. I think Rudy deserves to be higher than number 6, but I'm surprised he ranked that high. Rudy doesn't seek the spotlight the way Riley or Jackson do, and doesn't really care if he gets the attention that all these others guys get, so he probably will never get the credit he deserves. But that's also part of why I like him so much.

Phil Jackson is a great coach. Is Rudy better, I don't know but you can't argue about Phil's accomplishments.
You can say all you want that Phil rode MJ/Shaq to titles but guess what Rudy rode Dream the same way.
Phil has had an advantage that he can pick and choose his jobs now and that is why he got the LA job. You wouldn't expect Bill Gates to leave Microsoft and open a Subway franchise would you?
Rudy is going thru a rebuilding period. We don't know if he will be succesful or not. We all hope it works out, but I'm sure all 29 teams in the league have a 5 year plan on winning a championship just like us.
I also like Larry Brown. He is a great builder. I don't know if he can take a team all the way to a Championship but he can build a team as quickly as anyone. Plus the way he dealt with AI was succesful.
    Riley is washed up.
Personally I like George Karl, he is a funny guy and can coach talent, just he hasn't won a championship either, but all his players seem to enjoy him.

Phil Jackass is the biggest overrated piece of **** in sports history!

Pat Riley was good, but he hasnt done anything in a while. He overworks his players like crazy in the regular season and they tire out and bow down in the first round of the playoffs every single freakin year!

Larry Brown can kiss my ass with his whinny "Steve Francis is showing off" ASS! There is a reason he was an assistant to Rudy in the Olympics!

George Karl is an amazing coach.

Jerry Sloan is a dirty, but a really really good coach.

    Rudy is simply the BEST!

Phil Jackson's Bulls are down by two with 8 seconds left and the ball at half court... this is crunch time for a coach. He's got to make the right move or it's over.

Phil Jackson: "Um, Mike... you wanna take this?"

    Michael Jordan: "Uh, yeah... sure."

PJ: "Okay, Toni, pass the ball to Michael."

That was an actual transcript from every one of the top 10 hardest coaching desisions PJ ever made while coach of the Bulls. Substitute Jordan for Shaq/Kobe and Horry for Toni and those are also the actual transcipt from every of the his hardest coaching desicions with the lakers too.

Have PJ and Riles coach our team last year to a 45 win season and a near impecable record against the eastern conference and then we'll talk.

    Rudy's the best... hands down.

Phil Jackson inherits teams that are already there. He has never put his signature on a team the way Rudy or Riley has. He has an impressive record as a coach, but by looking not only at the players that are on those teams, but the players that were there when he took the teams over, that record should get him no higher than fourth. I would put Lenny Wilkens ahead of Jackson. But top three are probably Riley, Brown, Rudy.

These other coaches might be better but Rudy T has the hardware to be the third best coach behind Riley and Jackson.

It's hard to gauge how good PJ is.

He's had the luxury of having some of the most dominant players in the league on his squad. Also, those players had some good role players surronding them.

    Jordan/Pippen/Grant/Paxson/Kerr
    Shaq/Kobe/Harper/Fox/Horry/Fisher

I'm not saying he's not good. I just wonder what Rudy T could've done with those same lineups.

Riley is an amazing coach, he's had a lot of bad luck though. Sloan, well, I'm biased. I'm undecided about Karl.

Still, Rudy T is my favorite NBA coach.

Funny how only 2 of those coaches have more rings then Rudy, or have rings at all! George Karl and Larry Brown combined have 2 Finals appearances, Rudy has 2 championships, and has taken less talent and achieved more then those coaches. I couldn't buy those coaches being coach of the year over Rudy, though I think Rudy had a good case for it, but to say they're better? Come on!

jackson = no. I don't care how many larry o'brien trophies he has. does anyone honestly believe that phil jackson could've coached a team starting kenny smith, otis thorpe, vernon maxwell and robert horry to a championship?

    larry brown = maybe.

phil riley = ha! has anyone's 80s reputation lasted longer? and whoa, he won a couple of titles with the nba's all-time leading scorer, the former all-time leading assist man and james worthy! what a coaching feat!

jerry sloan = hahahahahahahahahaha. does anyone honestly believe that jerry sloan could've coached a team with a starting lineup of karl malone ["the best power forward ever to play the game"] and john stockton [the nba's all-time leading assist man] to a championship?

george karl = um, no. he seems to do a great job of causing general derision and enticing teams full of headcases to play well up until the moment when they will ultimately self-destruct.

none-- I repeat, NONE-- of these coaches can make an outright claim of superiority to rudy. larry brown is the only one of these guys who comes close to having done as much with as little as rudy.

rudy will continue to be an underrated coach for as long as he coaches. the only reason I can think of for this is that rudy, God bless him, just doesn't seem to have the ego that most of these clowns [phil jackson] have. he doesn't seem to need the accolades the others do, and for that reason, he's probably happier at the end of the day.

but the man is a great coach. people need to give him his props.

the title the rockets won in '95 is the single most incredible championship-winning story that I can think of in nba history. a team in the 6th seed beats, what was it, 3 60-win teams? then sweeps the upcoming dynasty?

I cannot think of any sports team that came together like that in just that way at such an amazing time. a team doesn't do that with some knucklehead coaching them.

none of phil jackson's teams have ever done that. michael jordan coached that team. pat riley's teams have never done that. george karl, jerry sloan? . . please.

Its first of all Pat Riley. Hands down he is the best Coach in the Nba right now. The guy has made every team a winning team. Hes won soo many division titles and couple rings.

    Hey Sir Arthur,

Rudy is at worst the third best coach. Based on accomplishments that is. If you base it on effort he is #1. Rudy has one of the best playoff runs ever under his belt. Plus two rings.

PJ rode Micheal for his rings. He didnt have to do anything hard, give the ball to mike...duh. The last two titles where much harder because he had to discipline the cry babies. Phil could be #1 I guess... [IMG]

Riley. No. No. No. He is not even a good coach anymore. We are talking about current ability not past.

Brown did take the 76ers a long way but didnt finish. No Ring No Bling. One year wonder.

Karl and Sloan know how to win in the regular season but CHOKE in the playoffs.

Rudy is #2 among current coaches. Especially what he did last year transforming this team into a playoff caliber club. He and CD rebuilt this team in less than three years without pulling a Chicago Bulls. Top that!

How is it possible to really know?

Rudy has managed some terrific accomplishments. But he also lost with perhaps the most talented team in the NBA in 1997. Hakeem, Barkley, Drexler, Willis, Johnson, Elie, Harrington... that was a truly terrific team. Personally, I think they were better than the Jazz (who beat them) or the Bulls. Is Rudy responsible for his superior team losing to Sloan's? Maybe.

OTOH, that Rockets team was cobbled together before the season in an attempt to regain the championship lost the prior year. The Jazz had years to build chemistry. And for the first time ever, Malone dominated Barkley, and not the other way around.

Of course, maybe it didn't have anything to do with the coaches either time. Maybe popular wisdom is correct, and the team with the best player really does win every time. In '94 and '95, Hakeem was better than Ewing and Shaq. In '97, perhaps Malone had surpassed Hakeem, but was in turn defeated by his Airness. It works that way, too... but that doesn't mean it's correct.

Sloan's better at X's and O's... Rudy's better at relationships. IMO.

Oh, and I know a lot of you will think I'm crazy, but I think George Karl and Larry Brown are the best right now [IMG]. I

If I were to list the 6 my own way, it'd be: Karl, Riley, Tomjanovich, Sloan, Brown, Jackson.

People seem to get on Phil Jackson's case a lot, because he's always had great talent wherever he's been. The truth is that it takes talent to win an NBA championship. There's a reason why Golden State and Washington anually finish in the NBA lottery...Because they SUCK!! There's a reason why only one team ('79 Sonics) has won an NBA title without one of the 50 greatest players on the squad. It's the players that win the NBA title, not the coach. The coach is the person that guides the team.

Take a look at the Bulls of the 90's. Phil Jackson inherited almost the exact same team as Doug Collins, who couldn't take the Bulls all the way. Next thing you know, he has six NBA titles.

Lakers...Phil Jackson inherits the exact same team as Del Harris, who couldn't take the Lakers to the NBA title. Wow, here comes two more titles. Furthermore, he takes that Lakers team and b****slaps the Spurs team that swept the Lakers just two seasons before.

Look at this from Jackson's perspective. Let's say that you're an NBA coach looking for a job and you get an offer from two different teams. Do you take the offer from the team that has

    a) Shaq and Kobe
    b) Tyson Chandler and Marcus Fizer

Hmmm, let me think about that...If anything, that proves that Jackson is a smart coach.

Now that you think of it, Red Auerbach wasn't a very good coach either. He just rode the coattails of Bill Russel and Hondo...

Now, if Phil Jackson had losing season and first round playoff exits with all that talent, THEN you can rag on his coaching ability....

No, no, no. Let me clear up some confusion here. These coaches were ranked against Rudy's pinky toe. CBS decided that it was unfair to rank any coach against the whole Rudy, so they went with the next best thing ... a small, useless appendage. I hear that his belt came in 10th place.

Rudy is one of the top three coaches out there right now. Having said that I look foward to seeing how this team does next year and if Rudy can use his superior coaching to lead us to improvement.

It'll also take a good coach to come up with effective zone plays.
