[rquoter]Grizzlies small forward Rudy Gay will miss the rest of this season after a second opinion on his partially dislocated left shoulder determined that the injury requires surgery.

Gay received the news after traveling to Birmingham, Ala., to visit renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

“I’ve never really been hurt. I’ve never had anything shut me down,” Gay said. “There’s really no brace or anything I can wear to make it better. I have to have the surgery.”

Gay was hurt Feb. 15 in a game against Philadelphia. He’s had to sit out the past five weeks. However, the healing process hasn’t progressed enough to allow Gay full range of motion in the shoulder.

Predictably, the 24-year-old sounded saddened by the news that he won’t be a part of the Grizzlies’ first playoff run since 2006. They are sitting in the eighth seed with a two-game lead over Houston in the Western Conference playoff standings.

“Not being able to celebrate the success of the team on the court is hard,” Gay said. “I was even thinking about going without the surgery and risk further injury to play. But I’ve been getting advised not to do it.”

Griz owner Michael Heisley, coach Lionel Hollins and Gay’s agent, Jeff Austin, convinced the fifth-year player to follow Dr. Andrews’ recommendation.

The organization understandably would like to protect a big investment, too. Gay signed a five-year, $84 million contract before the start of this season. For his part, Gay responded by producing a career year in several statistical categories this season.

He still ranks second on the team in scoring (19.8 points) and is posting career bests in assists (2.8), steals (1.69), blocks (1.1), field goal percentage (.471), three-point field goal percentage (.396), free throw percentage (.805) and minutes (39.9).

Gay said no date has been set for the surgery.[/rquoter]

Damn I was hoping he would come back and be a ball stopper for Memphis; They are playing good team ball and Tony Allen is Ballin'!

Oh no! The Grizzlies just can't catch a break. I cannot believe this is happening.

I know this helps the Rockets playoff chances but what a major bummer for the Grizzlies and their fans. If the Rockets don't get the 8th seed, I hope Memphis does.

how does this help? Mem has been making a run for that playoff spot for just about as long as he's been out. We need him back in!

The Grizz should have seen it coming. Talented young guy drafted by the Rockets is doomed. That one moment when he had the Rockets baseball cap on sealed Rudy's fate.

Morey waited too long to trade Yao but at least he didn't do so with Gay.

And, mostly likely, 2 second round picks in 2013! I don't know why, but I just find it difficult to see Memphis making the playoffs twice by then...

Ahh, and to think how many people hated that trade! We owned them!

I don't know if this is good or bad for the Rockets. Grizzlies have been playing great without him. Their schedule coming up should tell the tale

Imagine if Gay was on a Rockets team this year making a playoff run...fans would be committing suicide after another injury, especially right before the playoffs. Tough break for Memphis, but i'm not sure they can't get the 8th spot without him.

It is good for the Rox and bad for the Griz. Even if they get the 8th spot, they will need to get Gay for the playoffs:eek:. However, Gay may not be available for the playoffs. Even if Gay is ready deeper into the playoffs, he will be rusty and out of rhythm for sure. They have some tough games that I'm sure they're going to wish they could get Gay to help them, come the last few mins. of the game.

Gay might miss six months, so I doubt there's any chance he'll come back in the playoffs, should the Grizzlies make the playoffs.

That's going a bit far but your point is made.

If this deflates the other players on the team, the Rockets should be able to easily pass them. If the Grizzlies keep playing hard like they have, it could go down to the wire. They have done OK without him.

Tfor3, Gay is definitely out for the playoffs. He will be having surgery and has been shut down for the season.

Honestly, I think we are numb to it. I mean Yao going down this year was, at the time, a death blow to our playoff chances and everyone pretty much took it in stride. Different circumstances but it seems we all expect the worst and hope for the best with our little Rockets.

I think we're numb to yao's situation because we almost expect it now. Same with tmac...but Gay doesn't have a real injury history, until now. That's why i think it would be tough on fans. We get rid of tmac and think it's just yao now and he's already out. To then have Gay go out before the playoffs would be devastating.
