I got this off the message board (CNNSI)

    OK,

Well, here is one thing I wanted to say,

At last we will see how good Rudy is in implementing a team game. He is bloody forced now to change his tactics!! However I strongly suspect that Rudy will not be able to adapt.

He is excellent in complementing his star players with good role players and supporting cast, although I really wonder who deserves the credit: him or Dawson? I love Rudy though, but now he has to show he can win and not rely on one man (Olajuwon or Steve) but on his team and his tactics!

    Welcome new Nba rules!

Actually I think that these new rules are actually very good for us, at least for our weak points: rebounds and interior defence: cato won't have to move for the rebound he'll be right under it! and if he doesn"t have any still, you really can't do anything more for him!

    Hmmm....

Take either Steve or Cuttino off of last year's team. Which way has more wins?

I think minus Steve we would suffer more, but it would be close. Cuttino is similarly valueable.

Rudy isn't a one trick pony
it just looks that way because he
    has a philosophy

Why use a three guns when I'm beating you
    with one?

he used that one trick til you stop it
if you can't stop . .then you complain about it
[think about Street fighter. If someone has
one supermove that you CANNOT STOP and they
use it over and over. . .does it make them
    a bad player? . . ]

I think people will be surprised by these
rockets and guess what . . . they will still
    ISO!!

    Yeah baby.

That'll teach David Stern and the rest of the NBA:

    DON'T MESS WITH RUDY T.!

    ------------------
The media's Eddie Griffin NBA Draft player profile before he landed in the Rockets hands:

What he does: He was second in the nation in blocked shots and fifth in rebounds as a freshman last season; has good shooting range and even had a triple-double.
    Reminds people of: Antawn Jamison
What he would do for his team: He could play either forward spot and runs the floor. He'll give his team a valuble inside scoring threat.

The media's review of the Rocket's draft after they got Eddie Griffin:

I'd give their draft a B. Sure, Griffin was highly touted but his behavior and attitude can be a chemistry wrecker. Needs to bulk up more. Not exactly NBA-ready. Not the best choice for Houston.

It's very sad. The "wonderfully talented prospect" one second, but the moment the media learns he'll be a Houston Rocket, it's criticize-o-rama.

Actually it depends on what kind of zone you run wether or not you get a lot of rebounds. If you are running a 2 3 zone (for shaq) the other team will get a lot of offensive rebounds, actually most zones allow for a lot of offensive rebounds, becasue the player gets in the habit of gaurding one place. I fear with Catos mental capacity he will still be standing in that spot on offense. I also dont think you will see many people try and zone the rockets, they have no real inside threat

I think we will see *NEW* zones

for the Spurs I would run
    3 man to man
    and
    2 men tending the basket

    For us
    a Triangle and Two

I think that the Rockets AGAINST the zone
will still use some ISO to see how teams
react. even cheating over and trying to cut
off passing lanes may not help
because ball fakes could be deadly if say
matt bullard is replace with a slasher/shooter
So folx will cut off the lane to the 3 pt shooter
but the shooter steps in [or cuts] and is open

    Rocket River
    just my Opinion

It is not a typical zone that we are used to seeing.

There will actually be defensive 3 seconds called.

So you can't just camp a guy in the middle and play a zone.

I don't think it will change Rudy's philosophy at all. He will still try to isolate somehow and force opponents to double and then kick out to the jump shooters behind the arc.

According to The Sporting News, the zone will mark the demise of the Francis-Mobley Rockets.

    Why not?
The only way he would get three seconds call
when there is NO ONE in the lane but him
Cause if anothe player is within ARMS length
or comes within arms length the count starts
    again . . .right?

The 3 second rule is bull****
So if all 5 of my players beyond the 3 point
line and they HAVE to stay there for 4 seconds
to get a 3 second call
IF on cuts to the basket and we have
to reset the 3 seconds starts again because
someone came within ARMS length of the
player in the middle of the zone
right? I'm so lost on this ****

COULD SOME ONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THE WACKY RULE TO ME!!

    Rocket RIver
forget it. .. i'll start another thread :)

The first thing to remember is that it usually takes the refs 6 seconds to count 3 seconds. The second thing to remember is that the refs usually even will not count when the O team is running a play with center side to side movement. I mean Shaq is not ready for the ball until he has spent a good six seconds in paint [IMG]

I suspect that the refs will feel even less pressure to make the defensive 3 second call.

Another thing to consider is that any team that plays the Lakers (or any other team which runs its O through the low block) can run college zones if they want, since Shaq is never more than an arm's length from the paint.

In conclusion, the new D 3 second will be joke before it is said and done.

What I am interested in finding out is how Gearge Karl have the Bucks play D next year. Karl will be the coach to figure out how to best exploit the new D rules the quickest.

What I anticipate is that teams will trap more and that is about it.

Rudy is not a stupid man. He will switch tactics when necessary. I would think that the past two years would have demonstrated that he is not just a guy who uses his one great power move; he knows his tools (players), and he will use their strengths where appropriate. He used that one great power move (give it to Hakeem in the post) for so many years because it used to work... And he changed tactics when it stopped working.

Perhaps Rudy's only weakness has been not acknowledging his tools' weaknesses... He's a player's coach because he encourages men to overcome their weaknesses. Maybe he should just acknowledge that Player X can do this, but he can't do that... And build a framework for his game plan from there?

Knowing your limitations can be among the greatest assets.

As far as the zone is concerned, it favors any team that A) has speed, and B) understands motion offense. I think the Rocks are pretty well off in both departments, and I have confidence that Rudy will drill them correctly (emphasizing motion). Mooch and Steve will have to adapt, not Rudy.

Oh, sure, he's gonna miss yelling "Illegal D!" 6 times a game, and we're going to miss seeing him call it (especially when we didn't see what happened), but all that motion requires is speed, coordination, and chemistry. I think this team has the latter two now - the speed is inherent.

This will all add up to exciting basketball.

And Rudy will still run ISOs; Cuttino will just have to deal with not running them every other possesion...
