I'm not buying it. He's trying to get traded, if he gets traded I bet he changes his tone and comes over either this season or next season. No way he waits 2 years.
Did anyone else notice that Ricky Rubio sounded a lot like Borat when he was being interviewed on draft night?
He's dumb. I don't understand why draftees get so high-falutin' about where they are willing to play. The sooner he gets to the NBA and starts playing, the better it will be for him financially and experientially. And, if he's as good as he is supposed to be, Minn won't be a basement team long.
He'll get traded. I think Minnesota is just waiting for the best offer, but they better do it fast before he signs with a team over there.
That's not a word. And Rubio needs to lay off the cheese and whine. Playing in Minny isn't so bad. They've got the best PF under age 25. Rubio + Jefferson is scary.
i think he should be able to do what he wants. but at the same time if everyone gets to the point where they play where they want its not good. too bad the dollar is the euro's b****. players would want to play in the nba more i think then.
The real question is whether he'll threaten the Wolves by attempting to sit out a year. Otherwise no amount of staying in Europe will change the Wolves' stance. Buyout clause.
If this kind of stuff keeps happening, the NBA is going to need to implement new rules in their next labor agreement. This kind of stuff isn't good for competitive balance at all if certain teams aren't on an even playing field. The idea of the rookie contract is that you pay your dues in the league, and then when you're a free agent, you can choose your team. If I'm David Stern, I would implement a policy that if you draft someone in the first round, you have their rights for a minimum of 3 years after they sign their rookie contract. So if Rubio never signs with Minnesota, Minnesota just holds his rights forever, meaning he can't play in the NBA. I don't know how second round picks work, but it seems to be something like that since teams seem to stash people over in Europe (like Scola) for several years and hold onto their rights.
agreed 100%, but i think teams already own the rights to first round picks no matter how long they avoid signing in the nba.
Because believe it or not, some of them actually have options. The NBA isn't the only place that a player can make $$ playing basketball.
It will never get to that point. The only guys we see pulling stuff like this are those with big balls who have the guts to risk it all, and those who have other options to make big $$ (i.e. Rubio, Elway, etc). Don't hate a man for not putting the NBA above everything else. That's just like you interviewing for 2 diff jobs, and picking the one that suits you the best.
How can you implement a labor law that prevents a kid from playing overseas if he isn't signed to a contract in your league? GM's need to just wake up and realize that the days where all kids have no other options but college or NBA are over. Kids can now make decent money outside of the NBA. Kids can now get paid instead of being forced to go to college. The NBA is not the master of all things basketball....at times they have to compete too when players have other options. I can see the beef in Steve Francis type cases, but how can you hate on a dude for choosing not to pay a large sum to play in a place he doesn't want to be?
I think you missed his point. I'm not sure what the NBA rule is, but it seems that Minny will lose Rubio's rights after a certain number of years. Major is advocating Minny be able to hold Rubio's rights forever. So either he plays for Minny (if Minny doesn't trade him) or plays overseas. He shouldn't be able to stay in Spain for a couple years then sign with the Lakers as a FA.
