Holyfield negotiating to fight Jones on Oct. 4

Evander Holyfield says he's in negotiations to fight Roy Jones Jr. for the WBA heavyweight title on Oct. 4 at Madison Square Garden.

The 40-year-old former four-time champion told The Associated Press at an Alabama political gathering Tuesday night that negotiations for the fight are ongoing.

It would be the second straight heavyweight title fight for the aging former champion, who lost a decision to Chris Byrd for the IBF version of the title last December.

Holyfield injured his shoulder in that fight and underwent rotator cuff surgery. But he said he's healed and ready to win an unprecedented fifth title.

"It's just a matter of time,'' he said.

Jones moved up from light heavyweight to win the WBA heavyweight crown in March, beating John Ruiz in a 12-round decision. Holyfield emerged soon after that as Jones' most likely opponent, and there was some speculation that the fight would be held in Africa.

But Holyfield, appearing in Montgomery, Ala., at a fund-raiser for Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, said the fight probably would be held Oct. 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Lennox Lewis is recognized by most in boxing as the true heavyweight champion, and he holds the WBC version of the title. He gave up the other two titles, which he won by beating Holyfield in a unification fight.

Roy Jones is way too small to start fighting these heavyweights. All Evander needs to do is charge, push, hold and jab the hell out of him, he's just too big and strong for Jones to handle. Evender is a very smart boxer.

It's all about Roy Jones. He might be to small, but Evander is getting too old.

Holyfield fought and lost to Byrd with a torn rotator through most of the fight, i'll give him the heart thing. Jones is once again taking the easy money fight, big name, fairly easy win, big money. He should fight Lewis or even Tyson and just get it over with. Didn't Holyfield lose twice and have one draw with Ruiz? This is just annoying...

Jones needs to fight Tyson, Byrd, then Lewis. And kick all of their asses.

    Period.

Roy Jones is definitely smaller, but Evander is way older and his skills have eroded past the point of no return, as evidenced in his last two fights. Roy Jones will win this in a cakewalk. Hopefully it will finally persuade Holyfield to retire, but I doubt it.

Ruiz fought a dumb fight. He didn't know how to use his size and strength to his advantage. Even though he might be old, evander will rough Jones up and jab him to death.

I hope Holyfield knocks him out. I can't stand Roy Jones and his fighting style, he fights not to lose instead of fighting to win.

    Roy Jones will murder Evander.

Roy Jones vs Mike Tyson would be a fight I would want to see, but I think Roy would take Tyson too.

I would definitely watch Roy Jones vs Lennox Lewis but thats a huge mis match for Roy. Lennox would win because of his size eventhough Roy would give him a fight.

Roy Jones vs Tyson is the fight for the ages.

If Jones could beat Lewis (not likely) then he has to be given consideration as best boxer fo all time over Sugar Ray Robinson.

If Jones fights and beats Lewis he is the best of all time. I wonder if Lewis would be able to catch him with those jabs that made Tyson look so swollen. Lewis isn't the quickest guy out there, I hope we get to see it somehow.

WTF! Holyfield gets 3 shots to beat Ruiz FAILS so that entitles him to another shot at the championship, against Jones who pounded the
**** out of Ruiz...another high point for boxing.

He pounded the **** out of him, but he didn't come close to knocking him out. He doesn't have the knockout power in the heavyweights. Evander can take alot of punishment. Its all about the matchups.
