1. Franchie Player 2. Superstar 3. Star 4. Great Player 5. Good Player 6. Role Player 7. Warm Body I wonder how people distinguish between the different ranks.. IMO 1. Franchise player is the person the organization builds the team around and everyone is there to compliment this persons talents. The cornerstone of the organization.. (Shaq, Duncan, KG) usually counted on to be dominant every night.. (consistentcy) 2. Superstar players are still in a league of their own.. right below franchise player because they are awesome players but cant dominate a game on their own but are very influential on the outcome.. (TMac, Kobe, JKidd) (also consistent but having less impact on the game as franchise players, meaning they rely on other players more) 3. Stars are usually the players you can count on to be the go to guy, usually the best player on the team (All Stars) 4. Great players are usually one dimensional.. (offensive minded, or defensive minded, pure shooter) someone like AHouston comes to mind right away.. or SAR people who will get you points but dont really change the outcome as often. (usually players that are almost stars but on losing teams) 5. Good players are [great players lite] meaning usually less talented than great players (not always) but have some glaring weakness.. MoT and Vlade come to mind. 6. Role players are brought in to compliment the above players and are often easier to replace.. They fill in needs at certain spots (Pike, AGriffin) 7. Warm bodies - sometimes looked at as a person who can commit 6 fouls or are underdeveloped talnet waiting for their turn. So with this in mind I wanted to talk about our players.. if people have different opinions please share. Franchise Player 0 SuperStar 0 Star Yao - until he becomes more consistent he wont be more than that, he is closer to being a superstar than a great player but still needs to work on alot of things.. rebounding, stamina and blocks come to mind right away. SF3 - in a bad shooting slump which he can hopefully find his way out of. He doesnt have to score the most points (JKidd as an example) he just has to be on the court and he has an impact. His turnovers, and decision making leave me scratching my head but his heart and desire to win and the way he sacrifices his body and stats for the team has made me a bigger SF3 than ever.. (even though I came to this board as a Yao fan) Great Player Cat - he has been as consistent as any guard can be but I think is limited by his size. JJackson - solid all around player has no glaring weaknesses... Good Player MoT - On a different team and getting more touches could be a great player.. but a solid player of the bench but his rebounding and defense is a hole in his game. Cato - A defensive specialist, I trust him to get a rebound or force someone into a bad shot (in the post) but too much of an offensive liability. Role Player MJackson - If younger could have been a difference maker, but his poor shooting and poor defense has become more evident lately.. Spoon - tremendous potential (Baby Barkley if i remember) but limited too much by his size and age. still a tremendous pickup and great role player. AGriffin - Pike - Could have been a good player.. 3 pt specialist that is in a shooting slump doesnt have as much value.. im hoping he can contribute more later. Warm Body MWilks - hes on the IL SPadgett - this guy is an anamoly.. lost playing time due to the emergence of Spoon but JVG can still go to him in certain situations. Boki - This hurts the most.. but Boki seems to have lost all his playing time.. An undeveloped talent if nurtured correctly could be a great player possibly a star player. Great size and speed sweet outside stroke good ball handling skills.. I hope we dont let him rot at the the end of the bench. J
Superstar: Yao - when Yao gets shots we win. He also is the anchor of the best defense in the league. Star: Mobley - Shoots, defends, does other things too, but as long as my SG shoots and defends I am a happy camper. He has displayed the ability to be an elite scorer when given the opportuinity, as well as the ability to adapt better than any player I have ever seen. The next time he is asked to do the same thing two seasons in a row will be the first time. Jim Jackson - basically the same player as Mobley. Great Player: Francis - Scores (or used to), rebounds great for his position, mediocre passer at best, horrible defender. The single most overrated player on the Rockets and perhaps in the league. Still, with his ability to carry the load offensively for a middle of the pack team and put asses in seats, he can have a lot of value to a team with no stars. Good Player: Cato and Mo Taylor are like Master and Blaster from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Instead of being the brains and the brawn though, they are the offense and the defense. If there was some way to combine them, they would be a Brand-esque PF. Clarence Weatherspoon: Doesn't have the holes in his game that Cato and Mo have, but doesn't have the peaks in their specialty areas either. He is the type of player that is the fifth best starter on a championship team. He can hold down his position and let the other guys go to work. I think he could easily be our sixth man, though his contract is a concern. I would love to resign him on the cheap when his deal is up. His biggest problem was getting labeled the next Barkley. Role Player: Piatkowski - three point specialist, basically a shorter Matt Bullard. M. Jax - passing specialist. If he could shoot or play a lick of defense, he would be a passable starting PG. A. Griffin - defensive specialist, if only he could shoot the three like Bruce Bowen. Scott Padgett - kind of like Pike with less three point ability and more defense/rebounding. Warm Bodies: Wilks - a CBA level PG - see Moochie Norris. Boki - he has the potential to move up the ranks. Has shown some 3pt touch this year. It would be great if he could take over the starting SF job when Jim Jackson is old.
Room4, do you care to list ALL the players who you think belong in the first two catogories? it is easier to understand your definition that way. Otherwise it is just a languge game.
canoner, could you possibly edit your post so you don't quote the entire original post (which is gigantic)? I think rooms can understand what you mean without the quote.
im not trying to be 100% specific.. im more curious what other peoples opinions about our players are.. without bashing. Smoniker and I disagree about SF3.. I think Stevie Frenchfries is still a star player in a big bad long slump.. 16/6/6 is still quite a feat and once he finds his shots (which may be tougher) or goes to the hole more often (layups, dunks) his FG% would go way up. JKidd's scoring average is similar to SF3's and he is a superstar player.. SNash is also having a worse year in terms of scoring but does maintain a higher FG%.. Im just trying to make a point that as long as SF3 leads this team in the right direction and tries to get everyone involved and the team is winning. Hes a leader and a star to me.. J
too much typing......yao's a superstar, steve is great, cat's a star, everyone else......plug in where u wish.......
1. Franchise Player 2. Superstar 3. Star 4. Great Player 5. Good Player 6. Role Player 7. Warm Body Francis 3 Yao 1 Mobley 4 - for both the roles he and Jackson play, they do great in them Jim Jackson 4 Cato 6 Taylor 5 Weatherspoon 6 Mark Jackson 6 Piatkowski 6 Adrian Griffin 6 Nachbar 7/8 He is being used as a warm body, or a better term - misused. He's still developing, and it's just not possible for him to get the neccessary PT to develop. Wilks - 7
This is not really a good ranking system. So 4 out of 7 are at least great players? We don't need 4 levels from Franchise to great player. I will only have 5 levels total: Franchise Player, Great Player, Fine Player, Supporting Cast, Bench Warmer
ACTUALLY I'm more interested in how you think the Rockets Rank Among their peers in the WEST i.e. Yao = 2nd best center in the west [i know i maybe underrating him] Steve = 3rd best Point Guard Mobley = 5th among shooting guards etc where do you see them there? Rocket River
Couldn't you guys start your own thread with different ranking schemes instead of hijacking this one, some people have managed to use this system just fine.
for clarification.. some people are great players... JJackson, Cat, and etc.. but wouldnt be considered stars.. I think a star is someone who makes the people around them better, they feed off the stars energy and talent. looking at our team we have a pretty weak bench.. (overpaid too) Mot, Spoon, Cato have enormous contracts.. Im not worried about SF3 he will earn his paycheck with the remaining games.. (trust me) ^^ J
First, Mobley's adjusted FG% is .490 and Franics's is .429. Mobley shoots a lot more threes than Francis, so his FG% is only two points higher. As we can see from his adjusted FG%, he is a much better shooter. Second, apparently you don't consider defense a part of basketball, because Cat is far superior defensively to Francis. Maybe I am old fashioned (though I doubt it since I am only 24), but I think players should be competent on both ends of the floor before they are called stars. In fact, the only things Francis really does better than Cat are rebound, a skill which I don't place much value on in a guard, and pass, which is my only real complaint about Mobley, but Francis isn't really a good passer either.
A shooting guard's job is to score. Francis ranks higher in assists than Mobley does in scoring and Francis outscores him to boot. Mobley is a better defender but his defense is overrated.
You have got to be kidding. Cat gets the third most looks on the team. Francis gets the most. Taking that into consideration, Francis scores a whopping 1.2 more points per game. If you gave cat 1 more shot per game then he would score approximately the same number of points (on fewer shots). Mobley is 16th in scoring among shooting guards. Francis is 39th in A/TO ratio among point guards. You don't compare Mobley's scoring as a third option shooting guard to a first option center like Shaq.
