it's popping up on a bunch of wires, i think what happened was that they decided to do it over the summer and then made it official today (i believe there is like a one year period that the team has to do that which expires today/tomorrow)
it was done before, i remember a morey quote that said he was worth more signed to an extension than not.
well it was not made official till today, I guess probably if he had suffered a career ending injury between the summer and the deadline to exercise the option (today) it wouldn't have been exercised.

Beginning his third season in Houston, Head had his contract option picked up by the Rockets on Wednesday. The guard, who netted a three-pointer in a team-record 37 straight games last season, is expected to be a part of Houston's nine-man rotation this season. He shot 44.1 percent from three-point range last season -- good enough for the third best percentage in the league -- and averaged a career-best 10.9 points per game. Head is averaging 9.9 points and 2.6 assists over his career.
