Could we free up roster spot by sending Head to NBDL? Could we sign Baxter, Glover and send them to NBDL? Please advice.
The NBDL will definitely give us a roster spot if we give them Head. I don't know if they will give us anything for Glover and Baxter though. They may give us Head back.
During an NBA player’s first two seasons in the league (regardless of his age when he entered the league), his team will be permitted to assign him to a team in the NBA Development League. A player can be assigned to the NBADL up to three times per season. The player will continue to be paid his NBA salary and will continue to be included on his NBA team’s roster (on the inactive list) while playing in the NBADL. On the Rockets website this is what they have for our team, we know that Padgett is gone. I have no idea whats up with Braggs. If we resign Deke, and DA goes thru we will be at 16 (counting Braggs). With the new CBA i think we can have 12 active and 3 inactive. 1. Vin Baker 2. Jon Barry 3. Ryan Bowen 4. Torraye Braggs(FA) 5. Luther Head 6. Juwan Howard 7. Mike James 8. Tracy McGrady 9. Dikembe Mutombo (FA) 10. Moochie Norris 11. Scott Padgett (FA) 12. Bob Sura 13. Stromile Swift 14. Charlie Ward 15. David Wesley 16. Yao Ming
I believe we have 15 players on a roster (after singing Anderson). But if we will send Head to NBDL - we could sign Baxter or Glover...
It was my understanding that the new CBA abolished the notion of "inactive" players. You can have 15 players regardless of inactive or active. I could be wrong. The point was to get rid of the silly MoT diseases just to activate a different player. The player's union fought for this.
I can confirm you are wrong. G. Rosters • Each team is required to carry 12 players on its active list and one player on its inactive list (which will replace the injured list). Teams may have a maximum of three players on their inactive list (subject to hardship rules, which will apply in the event that a team with three injured players on its inactive list has a fourth player that suffers an injury). Players sent to the NBA Development League (see below) will continue to count on a team’s inactive list. • The league has agreed to guarantee that, on a league-wide basis, teams will maintain an average roster size of 14 players over the course of the season. http://www.realgm.com/src_feature_a...argaining_agreement__–_principal_deal_points/

Braggs and Padgett are gone, dropping the number to 14, and when we add DA back in, that gets us back to 15. Assuming that Head goes to the NBDL, and that Mooch, Ward, and Baker ride the 'inactive' list, we will have an effective roster of eleven players. This precludes, of course, any 2-for-1 deals the Rox might make, or any more releasing of players. Something like a S&T of Wesley + Ward for DerMarr Johnson might work. In any case, figure that Ryan Bowen probably will not see a lot of PT, and we could very well have a constant 10-man rotation. And that's if we DON'T pick up Baxter or Glover. Question for the gurus: Could we trade 2 of our guys for a future pick, even a 2nd rounder? Say, send Baker + Mooch to some team currently under the cap that knows it will probably want to be a player at the trade deadline? Would Charlotte be a possibility? Thanks
Good sythesis (Nero and micah1j). Yes with DA we have all 15 available spots accounted for, sending Head to the NDBL will probably be a good thing for him but will not free up a spot. To free up a spot we need to waive someone, Ward would probably be the guy. Or we could do a 1-0 trade, or 2-1 trade, or 2-0 trade to free up spots. We could trade any of Ward, Mooch or Baker (or all three) to an under the cap team (say through in the NY 2nd rounder owed us in 06 or our 08 2nd rounder, the next one we have). This seems the only way to take their contracts off the books, and also generates a trade exception we could use or just decline. Glover has no chance even if we did have a spot I think with DA on board. However Baxter has a chance. It make make sense actually if NO, Atl or Char need to take on salary to meet NBA minimums for team salary, the fact they get expiring contract and draft compensation might make it worth it to them. I definetly give up our 08 2nd rounder for a team to take on Ward in a 1-0 trade, then we can add Baxter and not hit the lux tax. I view Baxter as more promising than our likely 08 2nd rounder.
1. Vin Baker 2. Jon Barry 3. Ryan Bowen 4. Luther Head 5. Juwan Howard 6. Mike James 7. Yao Ming 8. Tracy McGrady 9. Dikembe Mutombo 10. Moochie Norris 11. Bob Sura 12. Stromile Swift 13. Charlie Ward 14. David Wesley 15. Derek Anderson Why do you count Braggs?
As DS said, we can do this but we will need to trade a pick with it as incentive. If the Rockets want to add Baxter that bad this is one of the easier ways to do it. I only see New Orleans & Charlotte as canidates for this. But now we are back to the question of is Baxter worth trading a 2nd round pick? I think not. If it were Spree/NVE at the vet minimum that is another question.
Wouldn't you take a 2 for 1 trade including a pick for Spree and then add Baxter to the open roster spot?
I say Baxter is well worth our 08 2nd rounder (the next one we have available)--the likelihood that future player would be as promising as Baxter is remote. The NY 2nd rounder is a tough call, probably not. Maybe another option is our 1st rounder in 06 for this team's (Char, Atl, NO) 06 2nd--they may only be a few slots apart. If they would allow future considerations where we choose between these options after this season (NY 2nd outright, or swap our 1st and their 2nd) I could go for. Forget Spree/NVE. With DA (who can play the same positions these guys can) along with last year's vets group there is no PT for them even if we had a roster spot. I much rather give Baxter a chance (three year vet min deal with player option) as a low priced long term back-up to Swift and eventual Howard replacement. If he really does excellent this year we could even consider trading Howard to a team like the Nets whom JH could really help and we might be able to get something for.
Sorry, but if we make a S&T deal with Minny for Spree it has Derek Anderson at the point written all over it. TMac, Spree, Barry, Anderson, Sura, with Head all splitting the minutes at the 1, 2, and 3, with TMac taking up most of the 3 minutes, Spree taking up most of the 2 minutes, and Sura and Anderson splitting the 1 minutes. Then using Barry along with either Anderson or Sura as your primary backups. James and Wesley gone in the S&T with Minny. I think I'd be happy with that rotation this year and we've still got spare parts in Baker and Norris to peddle to somebody at the deadline for a pure point guard. Then we go into next season with the MLE, and Spanoulis and Badiane ready to go.
Who would be the 2 in this 2 for 1? Taking Ward plus any other player (DW, Sura) it means you have to sign Spree for over 5 mil and I think guarantee at least 2 years of that salary. That is way too much for a soon to be 35 year old coming off his worst season and one with some character/chemistry questions.
That would acomplish the same thing except Spree would have a 3 year deal at 4M+ each year. He turns 35 in a couple of weeks. I decided to look up the S&T rules at Larry Coon's site 75. Can a free agent be signed and immediately traded? Under no circumstances can a team sign and then trade another team's free agent. But there is a special rule that allows teams to re-sign their own free agents for trading purposes, called the sign-and-trade rule. Under the sign-and-trade rule, the player is re-signed and immediately traded to another team. This is done by adding a clause to the contract which stipulates that the contract is invalid if the player's rights are not traded to the specific team within 48 hours. A sign-and-trade deal can be made even with players that have been renounced. However, a sign-and-trade deal cannot be made when the player was signed using the Mid-Level, $1 Million or Disabled Player exception. Sign-and-trade deals are only allowed if the contract is for three years or longer (however, only the first season of the contract must be guaranteed). So I guess there could be team options the last two years like Walker's deal with Miami.
Sherry, Head is not going to the NBDL. Remember what Dennis Lindsey said a month back about the drafting of Head and how it would make sense after they made some moves later on during the summer? and lets not forget the Rockets are paying Head a respectable first round pick salary for his rookie year. I just don't see jvg sending a player like Head, who does a lil bit of everything well, to the nbdl. One has to think he'll make coach a fan of his during those first few days of training camp and he'll earn playing time over some of the oldies on the team.
