If Yao keeps up the scoring and rebounding averages that he has had over the last five games I think it will be safe to say he'll get the Rookie of the Year award. Hopefully he won't get screwed like Steve did and have to share it with anyone.
I agree. Yao Ming is easily the most dominant Rookie at this point and if he continues will have huge stats by the end of the year.
I didn't think Yao could do it at first. Before he went down, I expected DeJuan Wagner to take advantage of playing for the Cavs and put up crazy Iverson #'s, but that's not gonna happen, even if he comes back healthier than ever. Drew Gooden's preseason also had me leaning his way. There's no doubt right now, though, Ming is gonna win it. 2 Rocket ROY winners in less than 5 years, that's awesome.
Yao has the chance to be the most dominant center outside of Shaq, and I think he will win the ROY trophy. Speaking of Shaq did anyone see his new Burger King ad? He doesn't have to show up on the screen, what is that all about? It must be cool to only have to call in to do a tv commercial.
I think Yao Ming is already the center that scares teams the most outside of Shaq. Teams are noticing and will be designing defenses around how to stop Yao Ming. Yao is the second best center in the league right now and he is still just an infant.
if rudy can keep yao on the court around 35 mins every game, no doubt that yao could be the rookie of the year. now yao only has 18.6 min per game, and he already become #3 in efficiency per 48 minutes in the league, just behind Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady. Efficiency Formula: ((PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK) - ((FGA - FGM) + (FTA - FTM) + TO)) / G
As it stands right now, the NBA statistics show Yao Ming is: - No. 30 and No. 2 (Tamar Slay No. 1) in Points per 48 minutes for the league and rookies respectively; - No. 24 and 3 (Mehmet Okur No. 1 and Dan Gadzuric No. 2) in Rebounds per 48 minute for the league and rookies respectively; - No. 18 and 1 in Field Goals made 48 minutes for the league and rookies respectively; - No. 1 in league and rookies for Field Goal percentage; - No. 5 in rookies for Free Throw Made percentage; - Not on Assist per 48 minutes (Jay William No. 1 in rookies); - Not on Steal per 48 minutes (Jay William No. 8 in rookies); - No. 29 and 5 in Block per 48 minutes in league and rookies respectively; and - No. 3 and 1 in Efficiency in 48 minutes in league and rookies respectively. Other rookies including Goodwin and William are not even close. So, if Ming keeps up the current statistic, he is ROY for sure even with a chance to crack an All Star roster as he has such a high efficiency. The scary part is, this is the season to date statistics. If Ming keeps up the same statistics as this week, he will an All Start in his rookie year for sure.
ming doesnt have the greatest endurance though, I saw multiple times where he was clutching his knees when the game play was stopped.
Yes, that is a good observation; but isn't it more impressive with statistics like that without endurance, which will come after his rest from three-year continuous game time or physical training.
I'm just gonna say that I don't think Yao should play 35 mins a game right now. He's not fit enough to do that yet but I'd definitely give him about 25 mins. Boy he can do a lot in those 25 mins though. As for ROY, I think this is pretty much a given Yao's gonna win it. Sure some other rooks have better numbers right now but that's cuz they've been getting the time to play (Gooden 34 mins, JWill 31 mins, CButler 33 mins, even Girsik 25 mins) and Yao haven't until recently (right now about 18 mins). That's gonna change. I would hate to be the other rooks when Yao's fit enough to play 30 mpg.
Even if if doesn't turn out the be the ROY, he has already proven himself to the whole world. The NBA would love to have Ming as the ROY, all the publicity should bring some new fans in. I guess what I'm saying is that the NBA would love to give the ROY award to a player that has a good reputation, is nice, and isn't the "typical money hungry type." Maybe they think the NBA could use a new "look." That would be 2 years in a row that the ROY has been from outside this country. Hopefuly that will make some American players try to "take it up a noch..."
One NBA analyst on ESPN said that of Yao even put up averge numbers (as in if he is not the rookie leader in anything) he would get his vote because he hasn't had a day off in years.
wouldnt it be cool if Yao even exceeds our expectations even more and starts to get MVP votes this year. But then again you have Francis getting talked about with that statement also.
If Yao keeps up this pace of the last 2 games and the Rockets make a top 5 or 6 seed in the west Yao will get a couple of mvp votes and if he improves from where he is at now (which is very possible) he will have to get some seriuos consideration... Answer me this is Yao Ming capable of being as good or better than Duncan... I think so... I know many will say that is blasphemous but I have never seen any one with the touch as this guy and he is alot stronger than I thought and only going to get stronger... he had some monster slams against the Dallas and the wizards, and I love the way he pushed Brendan off of him when Haywood tried to check him... the kid has talent and attitude I love this guy and he is stilll learning... Amazingly fast I might add... Go Rockets
If Yao keeps up the pace of the last week, he'll easily be the most consensus ROY since Duncan. Even more impressive since Yao's class has much better prospects/players than Duncan's class did. If he keeps it up, the coaches would have no choice but to put him on the all star team as a reserve....if he doesn't get voted in which is a very good possibility. BTW,I hope the NBA posts the numbers from China so we'd know the impact of their vote. At the very least he'd be in the rookie all star game (though he's more likely now to be on the varsity) and that could bring up an interesting scenario: Yao on the 1st year squad VS Griff on the 2nd year squad. In the short time of the Fish vs Sophs, have any teams had players on both squads in the same game?
Steve and Cat went against each other in Steve's rookie year. I think some other teams have done it as well, but my mind is not too sure on who.
My feeling is we got the best player in 3 of the last 4 drafts... I mean I think Steve was the best player in his year and Griff can be argued as the best player unless you give it to Gasol... And now without a doubt Yao is the best player this year... that is an amazing streak of luck considering accept for last year we were a legitimate playoff contender... Oh and don't forget Cat and TMo in the second round and Mo T free agent signing as well as finding the Hawk... The Rockets have one of the most promising franchises out there and we got a new stadium coming... Hat's off to the Rockets organization...
