I never understood why he couldn't even find a job in the league. He was playing like Mike Jordan a few years ago for Chicago. Then he went to NJ I think then got waived and then just disappeared. Can anyone educate me why? Did he get injured or something else?
I think the NBA passed a rule whereby you can't use Michael Jordan, Ron Mercer, and "like" in any combination whatsoever within the same sentence.
i was thinkin the same thing. What happened to Ron Mercer. Probably a decent 6th man. stonegate_archer I never understood why he couldn't even find a job in the league. He was playing like Mike Jordan a few years ago for Chicago. Then he went to NJ I think then got waived and then just disappeared. Can anyone educate me why? Did he get injured or something else? I think he meant the likeness, that they are both black, 6'6, shooting guards and play in chicago. But thats just my guess.
I remember him from his Boston days and i believe there was also a small debate whether they should keep him or Pierce. Obviously they made the right choice, but it's very odd his game went downhill so fast. He was insanely athletic, but maybe he couldn't add anything else to his game. When injuries hit him, it took away too much of his athleticism and he couldn't never recover form that. Take it with a grain of salt, but that's the way i remember it.
He came to the Pacers as part of the Ron Artest trade. he was lazy and unmotivated, didn't practice or play hard, got in every coach's doghouse, and quickly found his way out of the league. Draft Boston, free agent to Chicago, traded to Indiana. He was sent to San Antonio in the 3-way Brad Miller trade, then NJ, then waived in the Allan Houston rule cuts. He also had some knee issues I think.
He was also briefly in Orlando. Naturally talented scorer, but had nothing else to his game and didn't want there to be anything else to his game. Pacertom's summary is pretty much dead on the money. Evan
I don't remember him being athletic. wasn't he one of those patino kentucky draft picks. you'd think a coach would advoid drafting a guy like that after coaching him college.
The comparison with MJ is actually a quote from Bulls TV announcers. They said it quite a few times when he was playing good and making clutch shots. I live in Chicago by the way.
I remeber him being a pretty dynamic player in college - he could run fast and jump high, play a few positions, and had a lot of crazy dunks along with Derek Anderson. Apparently Pitino trashed him prior to draft in order to be able to pick him. I think he just fell in love with his potential. http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/mercer_010619.html
