Girlfriend's birthday is next week and I want to take her someplace quiet and romantic (for a change) but I don't want to have to drive all the way inside the loop and put up with the crowds and traffic if I don't have to.

I did a search and found lots of places, but they're all inside the loop. Looking for something along 59 North near Kingwood/Humble/Intercontinental Airport etc. So any help would be appreciated.

And save the McDonalds/Red Lobster jokes. :D

The answer starts and ends with Chez Nous. If you "think" you don't like French cooking, then just get a steak. If you have even an ounce of adventure in your palate, let the server guide you on what is good that night. On any given night, it can be the best restaurant in the Houston area, and I would certainly put it in my top three. I live in Pearland, and although the distance precludes me from dining their often (I MUST have wine with French cooking), I have made the trip......and I'm never disappointed.

thought the foodies here might find this interesting; here is this weeks newsletter from Chez Nous:

    Crawfish, Crayfish, Mudbugs and Ecrevisses

Crawfish season is upon us again, to many this conjures images of a crawfish boil; Heat and outdoors, sweaty clothes, spicy steam, sucking heads, burning lips, cold beer, the feel of bottle necks against numb gums, blaring zydeco music and the often prevailing atmosphere of forced gaiety as in "you are spozed to have fun so act like it!".
Others think of the many ways you can eat Crawfish; Etouffees, Jambalayas, Gumbos, Pies, Taquitos, Enchiladas etc...my mouth is burning as I write this, I can actually taste cayenne pepper on my tongue.

Europeans have a different Crawception. Clear water brooks and streams, carefully tied bundles of twigs and scraps of red cloth that the ecrevisses attach themselves to, exacting Chefs in starched whites. The memory of the great Fernand Point who became world famous for his Crayfish gratin, a relative who once a year invites the family over for his/her version of this dish. (Every year it gets better, is the relative's cooking improving? Are we becoming more polite? Or is it simply that tradition enhances the experience?)

The bottom line is that on the other side of the pond, using cayenne on crayfish would be akin to the Pope trying his luck on American Idol. Over there a crayfish dish is left intentionally subtle and no ingredient is allowed to mask or overpower the delicate flavor of the crustacean; Vivaldi replaces Zydeco.

This week our supplier from Breaux Bridge is coming thru, we will slash the big bags open, precipitate their content in big stockpots of boiling water, they will turn red and will be scooped out almost immediately. Everyone will pitch in shelling them, the heads and shells will be crushed and become the base for the Bisque, the tender bodies will find their ways to a Chicken, Sweatbread and Crawfish dish, a delicate and subtle Quenelle of Crawfish gratinee. Stacy did nix a crawfish sorbet!

Crawfish Bisque: menu price $7 e-mail family price $5
Gratin of Crawfish quenelles: menu $9 email family price $6
Farm raised Chicken with Crawfish and Sweetbread: menu $25 email family price $20

    Best to you all,
    Gerard, Stacy, Scott and Danielle

Amedeo's will save you some duckets over Chez Nouz and Chef David is fairly accomplished. Plus, they have a very good wine selection and the daily specials aren't too shabby.

oh and there is a $10 off coupon on the website. Just don't pull it out in front of the girl.

This would be PERFECT..... if not for the fact that we took her Mother there on Sunday. :D But yeah, the food there is VERY good and Chef David (if that's the owner) makes it a point to come visit every table. Super nice guy who runs a classy classy joint.

Pole, might have to look into that place. Not sure if she digs French food, but I KNOW she doesn't like seafood or any kind of food that comes from the water.

OK, I'm stumped. Other than seafood, what other food comes from the water?

Chez Nous. Nuff 'ced. I think it's the nicest restaurant in that part of town.

Take a look at the menu. There is no emphasis on seafood there.....the mudbugs just happen to be a part of this month's newsletter.

Chateaubriand (the very best part of the beef tenderloin) for two with an appy of French onion soup and a souffle for dessert would be very romantic and wouldn't scare picky eaters.

Off topic, but going to steakhouses with men is a great idea. When I go with my guys, we eat like men. We don't bother with appetizers or wine, and we all pay for our own stuff.

I can go to the finest places in town, and walk out spending less than $30.

Example? And why does ordering wine and/or appetizers make you less manly?

It doesn't. But we don't worry about appetizers or sides, which can make you look like a cheapskate on a date. We'll just order a steak, and a cocktail or two. Wine can get really expensive, also. Typically, you'll spend $10 or more on a glass and $40 or more on a bottle.

When I go to a nice steakhouse on a date, I'm lucky if I spend less than $150.

What's your example for finest places in town and walking out for less than $30. I mean, even with no sides, appetizers, wines, etc., I find it hard to believe there are a lot of steakhouses where you can eat like a man and walk out for less than $30.

Oh, heck. We've done it at Vic & Anthony's, Flemings, and Sullivans.
