    Clemens files for free agency

NEW YORK (AP) - Roger Clemens was among the final seven players to file for free agency Thursday night.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner, who has spent the last two seasons with the Houston Astros, hasn't said whether he plans to pitch in 2006.

He went 18-4 for the Astros in 2004, winning his last Cy Young Award, then became a free agent and re-signed with Houston for $18,000,022 - the final $22 matching his uniform number. The 43-year-old right-hander was 13-8 with a major league-best 1.87 ERA this season, helping the Astros reach the World Series for the first time.

Also filing on the final day were Boston first baseman John Olerud, Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Tim Salmon, Houston pitcher Russ Springer, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Wilson Alvarez and New York Mets pitchers Felix Heredia and Shingo Takatsu.

Heredia filed provisionally, pending a decision by the team on his $2.5 million 2006 option, which must be exercised by Tuesday and carries a $200,000 buyout. He is suspended for the first 10 days of next season after testing positive for a steroid.

Alvarez also filed provisionally, pending his reinstatement from the voluntary retired list.

While Takatsu does not have six years of major league service, a provision in his contract allowed him to file for free agency, the players' association said.

The 183 players who filed for free agency since the end of the World Series can start negotiating money with all teams starting Friday.

I saw this and was wondering if there is any chance that Clemens would play somewhere else. My guess is he's just covering his options but if it came down to it would either be the Stros or retirement.

i think last yr he accepted arbitration.....so it was a more definitive "astros or no one" type deal.......that being said, i think he is just going thru the motions and will either play here or retire

This bodes well for the 'Stros with the earlier "Clemens has made his mind up already" news. If he was going to retire no need to file, right?

Well he said he was going to ponder his decision that he had already made up. This is just to keep his options open.

I think he'll leave the game. He's ready to move on and try to get over the loss of his mother.

He did both. The arbitration deadline is later on. He accepted arb, then the Astros and Hendrickses agreed to terms before the deadline after which it would have actually gone to arbitration.

I think he might be in the same boat that he was last off season. Caught up in between. He seems to believe its time to retire, but his competitivity won't allow it, especially how he fell apart the last month of the season with that hammy problem.

If Clemens comes back and we get a couple of hitters, this team will win the world series next year.

He did say he like to keep options open. So could go either way. I don't see it as a clue.

I think Roger will play, if he was going to retire, he would announce it and the Astros would move on.....

He has a SWEETHEART deal, he doesn't have to travel on road trips he doesn't pitch on...he gets to be off half the time.....

Dude gets to have his cake and eat it too...for 20 mil....he will be back...you can take that to the bank.

Hopefully if he has already made up his mind that he will come down off that 18 mill from last year . I'm thinking that he has already discussed and has the numbers worked out for his contract in 06 . This way , we could talk to other FA without Roger Beltraning us .
