Rodney King Slams SUV Into House

RIALTO, Calif. - Rodney King, whose videotaped beating led to the deadly 1992 riots in Los Angeles, was hospitalized with a broken pelvis after he lost control of his SUV while weaving through traffic at 100 mph and crashed into a house, police said.

King, 39, was spotted Sunday by a police officer who said King was speeding and weaving through traffic in his 2003 Ford Expedition when he slammed into a utility pole, a chain-link fence and then the home, police said. No one in the home was injured.

King was in fair condition Monday afternoon, hospital spokesman Jorge Valencia said. His condition was not available Tuesday as hospital officials did not answer phone calls.

Police said they suspect that King was intoxicated, and a blood sample was drawn to determine his blood-alcohol level. Test results have not yet been released.

King was not arrested, but a report detailing the crash circumstances will be submitted to prosecutors, police Lt. Kathy Thompson said.

King, who is black, was chased by police through the San Fernando Valley in 1991 and was captured on videotape being beaten by four white officers.

After their acquittal, riots broke out and lasted for four days, leaving 55 dead and more than 2,000 injured. The mayhem caused $1 billion in property damage.

King later received a $3.8 million settlement from the city of Los Angeles in 1994.

He was convicted of spouse abuse in 1999 in San Bernardino County and was sentenced to 90 days in jail and four years probation.

King pleaded no contest to three counts of being under the influence of PCP and a count of indecent exposure in October 2001. A judge gave King a year in a drug treatment center even though a prosecutor argued King should spend a year in county jail.

Rialto, where King lives, is 53 miles east of Los Angeles.

    must you ask?

Seriously, I had no idea (or recollection) that the riots caused that many deaths.

Yeah, I doubt that the cops saw it was Rodney King and decided not to arrest him.

I heard that the Korean Business Owners in L.A. have struck a deal with the LAPD so Rodney is never arrested again.;)

REALLY? NO SH*T! What a frickin' stupid thing to put in this story. Like if you didn't know who Rodney King was you would be reading the story. [IMG]

Well it wouldn't be the first time he was drunk and/or high and causing trouble. People forget that the *reason* he was beaten was that he was so drunk/high that he was resisting any form of arrest. He was attempting to attack the police officers repeatedly in his stupor. No other tactics of restraint were working, and force had to be used. It is unfortunate that only the restraining force was captured on the videotape.

It amazes me that this man is the recipient of sympathy. He is a danger to society.

I know that I am in the minority, but if somebody drives 120 mph through a neighborhood, I think they deserve an ass whipping.

I'd say that your intuition regarding the actions of the cops is very questionable, given your recent incarceration.

[sarcasm]Poor guy...he just wants to live his life. All he did was a little drinking and driving. He was probably having a flashback to that terrible night when he did nothing and that caused him to drown his sorrows, and then when was driving safely and flagged by police for absolutely no reason...again..., of course he should run. He's been through so much, he should never be arrested again.[/sarcasm]

I was going more on the fact that Rodney King had, in fact, been arrested since the riots in 1992, than pure intuition.

If the cops didn't arrest him simply because of the fact that he was Rodney King, they need to be fired immediately.

I assume he wasn't arrested because he was immobilized and is hospitalized.

Had he been uninjured in the crash, I think he would've been placed under arrest, to get a blood sample for the BAC test, at the very least.

He was wrong for resisting arrest. But that beating they gave him should'nt have gone on as long as it did. LAPD was known for their tactics before the Rodney King incident. Again, I believe he was wrong for resisting arrest and driving while he was high and running from the police. But no one should be beat like they way they beat that idiot. You take him down get him cuffed...hog tied or whatever and take his butt to jail...then whoop his ass...JK
