I'm a displaced Rox fan living in DFW. I follow the rox as much as possible, and follow the mavs very minimally, no more than any other non rox team. I was wondering if someone with more knowledge could fill me in the hype behind roddy Beaubois. DFW is going bat*hit crazy that he is back. There's a billboard i drive by every day that is a quote from Carlisle saying "Beaubois will be an all star in this league". DFW sports radio loves talking about this guy, even debating if he'll return to form in time for them to push the mavs over the spurs/lakers in the playoffs(?!?!?!) Is there something huge i'm missing about this guy? this is his 2nd year. I didnt watch him last year, but looking at his stats (which are deceiving) he avg 7pts 1 asst but improved significantly towards the end of the year with a slew of 20 pt games and even a 40 pt game. is this guy legitimately good with a high ceiling or just a fan favorite? Anyways, thought i'd pose this rant/question here since talking to Mavs fans in DFW always ends up with me getting really annoyed and wanting to elbow them in the face a la Dirk on Landry.
What do you expect? They've got a buch of old guys and he's the only prominisg young guy. Should they put up Peja billboards instead with a Carlisle quote saying "He used to be a star in this league."???
He's a young guy on an older team and in the short time he was able to get on the court, he shot very solid percentages (51% FG, and 40% 3-pt). He had a 7-game stretch there last where he scored 17 ppg at about 25 mpg. Then later in the season he scored 40 pts during a game. Carlisle neglected to play him much during the playoffs last season, but in the last game of the series (in the only game of the series where he got over 5 minutes on the court) he was one of only 3 guys on the Mavs that actually scored more than 10 points (he had 16 total). The Mavs were pretty much desperate for a young guy with fresh legs that could come in off the bench and score points for them during the playoffs last season, and a lot of people thought Beaubois could have supplied that for them (including Carlisle after the series). He was primed to finally get some major minutes this season, but then he got hurt before it even started. In my opinion (and I hate the freaking Mavs), he can help turn Dallas into an even bigger contending threat if he gets his legs underneath him before the playoffs start.
The guy has serious potential. He's worth local hype. If the Mavs hadn't lost Caron Butler, I'd probably make them my Finals favorite from the West. With Beaubois back, wouldn't surprise me if they make it anyway.
