Rockets' Wells says he tried to 'wing it' in 2006-07

As much as Rockets forward Bonzi Wells said he wanted to "focus on the future," he had plenty to say about his past with the team on Monday.

"I played like 20 games last year," Wells said. "That was coach's decision. He wouldn't let you play, but when one of the stars got hurt. It was rough. I practiced all year and just played sporadically. That wasn't good for me because just playing at practice, I couldn't get a rhythm. I never knew the offense. We had 75 million plays. I never knew none of them. I just tried to wing it every night.

"I was going through a lot with my contract in Sacramento. I got past it. Now, I'm just going to focus on the future. I could have been that piece to help them get past to the next level, but I never got the opportunity. Maybe I wasn't mentally ready to do what I had to do last year. I'm going to take some of the blame, too. I don't worry about it anymore. That's last year. This is this year. I'm excited and focused."

I hope he is sincere. I think a focused Bonzi can have a bigger impact than Francis or James. Can he recreate Bonzi?

He's mentally set now. He clearly didn't want to play last year. He weighed more than our powerforwards.

No wonder no one could run Van Gundy's offense.

Yep. 38 million Yao post ups and 37 million Tracy PnRs can be hard to memorize.

Bonzi Wells is ready. I saw him on Sunday afternoon. The dude is in incredible shape, very focused and ready to play. I expect big things from him this season. I hope the rest of the players are as committed, but even if someone's not, we have so much depth this year, we are going to be fine. I can't wait for tipoff against the Lakers.

Apparently JVG's offensive playbook is an encyclopedia. And his inbounds plays are an almanac.

When asked what was meant by "winging it", Wells stated:

"That's easy. I was buffalo winging it every Tuesday at BW3"

lol so true. bonzi was SO OUT OF IT last yr. but he looks like he is in great shape and has a new mindset.

hopefully we'll have more plays that include the 2nd unit.

it was pretty much obvious that he was winging it...by the way he played, u could tell he wasn't giving 100%. And i don't buy that the system was the reason behind his poor play...After playing badly for the whole year, he had a really crazy good game against Boston where he scored ~30 pts, looking very aggressive (the game that both Yao and Tracy were out)

Is Bonzi going to give his salary back from last year since he admitted he wasn't trying?

He didn't admit to not trying, just to being clueless on the court.

Does anybody else have trouble understanding how Bonzi ever played well in the first place?
