The average starting shooting guard in the NBA this year stands 6-5, weighs 200 lbs, averages 35.3 minutes a game, 17.8 points/game, takes 15.3 shots/game, dishes out 3.6 assists, grabs 4.6 rebounds, 1.35 steals, shoots at a .424 %, and commits 2.4 turnovers a game.

Cuttino Mobley stands 6-4, 210 lbs, plays 40.3 minutes a game, scores 17 points a game, takes 13.3 fga/game, puts up 3 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.48 steals a game, shoots .457%, and turns the ball over 2.2 times a game.

    As the man says, discuss...;)

He's an average starting shooting guard. That's pretty much it.

Some people love him because he's better than the average second round draft choice. However, among starter shooting guards, he's average.

Some people hate him because for the past x years, he was the second leading scorer on a mediocre team and expect him to suddenly be a passer, which he's not.

    He's an average starting SG.

Looks like Cat is a bit above average. I would say that is excellent production, especially the way he gets it done on 2 less FGA. These numbers don't even take into account his defense, which has been the strongest part of his game this season, IMO. Interesting that such an addle-brained moron, as he is so often portrayed around here, could shoot at a higher percentage and commit fewer turnovers than your average SG. I am especially pleased becasue SG is one of the strongest positions in the NBA (with PF). Kudos to you, Cat.

You can say he's a average starting SG, but these anaylsis missed the point that if a repctive position (PG, SG....C) is the focal point of offense of a team. Mobley may be a average starting SG, but he's certainlty better than most third-option SG in the league.

He's been the heart and soul of the team so far this season.

He's the one bright spot on this team right now and this is coming from a guy that started the FIRE MOBLEY! thread. He's actually been playing smart ball as of late and has deferred to his teammates often. Francis has switched roles with Cat this year and has been turnover prone, and doesn't trust his teammates enough to do their part. While I understand that almost nobody could make a bucket last night, I fail to see how Francis can average 11 assists in one game, and then go back to selfish ball the next. Granted we shot poorly last night, Francis didn't create open looks for his teammates to take quality high percentage shots. Last night was one on one ISO ball all over again without the smooth passing that led us to those solid wins against NO and Detroit.

MacJAG - might be useful to include the average salary for your average starting players

interesting that Cat takes less than the average FGAs

Heart and soul? Me think NOT. Maybe a set different words will do justice but not those you used. He has shown up quite often this season with very good numbers atimes but his brain and mind is still subpar. This is not a hate note - rather calling it like I see it.

Mobley's not trying to get accepted into Mensa here, he's playing shooting guard in the NBA. How can you say his brain and mind are subpar? So I suppose TMac, Shaq, et al are all terrible players too by your standards. Basketball players do not need to be superb thinkers to win and I'm afraid you don't understand that.

I'm assuming Yao Ming is up in the Rockets vs. X-men III.

So far, we have seen that our starting backcourt is statistically an average backcourt, not making a significant differential in the game. For them to be above average, they have to score more using Macbeth's statistical rules.

What would be a more accurate statistic for measuring the effectiveness of our backcourt is to see how they stack up statistically against the opponents starting backcourts of the games they have played. This would measure the defensive element of our backcourt alone instead of measuring the defensive element of the whole NBA starting backcourts as described by Macbeth. Yes, steals and rebounds can be considered defensive statistics, but points allowed by the opponent along with the shooting percentage of your opponent are the key statistics that would compare apples to apples what our starters are doing against their opponents and they aren't measured in Macbeth's analysis.

However, it would not surprise me if there is probably no significant difference there as well. Although I would think based on our record that our opponent's starting backcourt's statistical line should be at least a little less then our starting backcourts line.

It would be interesting to see the excel spread sheet with this info, the starting players listed with the average to compare. So, some body get on that!

MacBeth: so are you going through NBA.com or whatever to average all the starting point guards, SG, on the 28 teams?

It just seems to me that the stats are pretty high. Hell, if every team had point guard X and shooting guard X they'd be pretty good right?

I mean in my opionion we can do just as well with PG and SG X, at least statistically speaking.

As the starter of the 'Cutino Issue' thread last preseason that spawned numerous Cat posts, I'm pleased with Cat's decision making and production thus far. His man does not go off...if team defense is 50 % of basketball, he contributes more than his fair share of 10%. Offensively, his 3pt FG% is pretty good, and he is playing more and more like Jim Jackson every game, which is a good thing.

And as far as yesterday's game, Francis was passing (in the 1st quarter)...his teammates were just not expecting it ...which led to TOs.

Maybe not so much turnover prone instead of just playing stupid basketball in the past. I understand as a shooting guard your purpose is to shoot, but his shot selection in the past was more difficult than it had to be, and he ended up trying to play the hero instead of making the game easier for himself. The big difference between his so far this season and in the past is his shot selection is better, and he's willing to defer to his teammates and not try to go 1 on 5 when there are other players on the team who can help him.

There's too much talent at the shooting guard spot. All these shooting guards play on different teams which creates parity. Only two players I know of can dominate the paint. That's Shaq and Duncan. That's why the Lakers and Spurs have won all the championships after the Bulls reign.

Which may show why the team has hot and cold streaks.

And that would explain why we have no guts and killer instinct as a team.

    I'm tired of being right.;)

His numbers aren't really great. Mobley should average more assists than he does, I think that's the only thing anyone can complain about.

BTW, it's important to notice that he plays 40+ minutes versus around 35 minutes for the average. For someone playing 40 minutes, I think we should expect one more assist, without affecting turnovers.

Other than that, I think he's doing a great job, especially with his efficiency on offense.

Position FGA eFG% FTA iFG Reb Ast T/O Blk PF Pts PER*
    SG 16.1 .514 4.3 20% 4.5 4.1 2.5 0.4 3.0 19.9 16.7
    SG 15.7 .358 4.3 17% 6.2 4.7 2.8 0.4 3.9 14.8 9.5

Again the average talk is just a joke. This position is an unconditional strength of the rockets and it is all due to Mobes. Relative to his opponents he is taking more shots; shooting at a 16% better clip in efg%; attempt the same amount of FT which is very telling because as a team we attempt much less than our opponents; a greater % of his shots are from the insider; the opponent outrebounds him and have more assists but they also turn the ball over more and foul more; and he of course scores over 5 point more per game. If all our positions were like this we would be the #1 seed in the league. Heck if our pg position was such a strength we would be the best in the league.
