Think about it. Until the end of the decade, there will be no better rivalry in the NBA. Each year in the playoffs, the Rockets and Spurs will play in the 2nd round because of the nonsensical playoff seedings where the division winners get the top three seeds. I don't see SA being anything other than the #1 seed for a few years. It sucks that they will always play in the 2nd round and not in the finals like the Lakers vs. Celtics, but it's safe to say that the winner of that 2nd round series each year will represent the WC in the Finals and most likely win the O'Brien for the forseeable future.

because of the seedings i can see us playing the mavs every year in the first round and the spurs every year in the second.

it kind of sucks because those are two tough teams.

I don't think so. Lakers VS Celtics was one of those rivalries that was built on more than compable talent- these guys hated each other, and it showed in their play.

So while we may have a rivalry talent-wise, the intangable of emotion won't be there.

It'd be nice if Yao started throwing fists Duncan's way. That'd jack up the emotions in a hurry.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the next couple of years, the NBA tweaks the playoffs by re-seeding after the first round or eliminate seeding by division altogether. If the top two teams are from the same division, then they will meet in the second round (if they win round one). If that happens a couple years in a row then it doesn't take a genius to figure out that something needs to be changed.

    I really hate the Spurs.

Oh how the fare weather or corporate Rocket fans here forget how in 93 the Spurs screwed the Rockets seeding in the playoffs by some BS after the buzzer tip in from David Robinson.
Oh how about the 94 when Dream was MVP, Spurs fans were saying that Robinson was better than Dream. What about the animosity that Vernon Maxwell played against these dudes?
Well all remember 95 vs MVP David Robinson.
How about the Spurs sitting Robinson out so they can get Duncan for #1?

Im so sick of the Spurs. the ONLY REASON they win is because of EX ROCKETS (THANKS LES ALEXENDAR).

Spurs Championship #1 (lockout season). 1. Mario Elie
Spurs Championship #2 1.that season was so boring, i forgot.
Spurs Championship #3 1. Robert Horry

AB, I would love for the Rockets and Spers to create the kind of storied rivalry the Lakers and Celtics had for so many years. So far, however, I have to admit that I don't have the "hatred" towards Duncan and company that I've held towards the East and West Coast teams... teams you admired for their superb players and coaching, while hating them for too often kicking our own Rockets to the curb.

The penultimate year was '85/'86, I guess. We crush the Pat Riley led Lakers, a great team and the defending champions, in the WC finals, only to fall to the Celtics in 6. That Celtics team may have been the best ever, and I'm convinced that we could have taken them had we had Lucas and a little more experience. That was why the league thought we had a dynasty in the making. We did, except that it blew up in a snow storm and Ralph's knees, damn it.

If we can regain the kind of crowds the Spers have on a nightly basis, the kind of home crowds we had in the glory years of the mid-'90's, then we will have a huge "leg up" in the yearly battle. I go to an occasional Rockets/Spers contest in SA, my brother in law having some fine season tickets, and I have never been to a game when the crowd doesn't go nuts. The place rocks! The only thing that keeps them relatively quiet is the Rockets having a lead and keeping it. If they get within a point or two, or tie the game, look out... the crowd goes wild. It's a real advantage that I wish we had consistantly. That'll come.

By the way, I have an easy time hating the Mavs,

    Yeah, so what?
    95 Rockets
    -beat Utah (Malone and Stockton)
    -beat Phoenix (Barkley and KJ)
    -beat San Antonio (Robinson MVP)
    -beat Orlando (Shaq)

    Those were 4 tough teams.

We need to quit thinking like this. F#$@#$ San Antonio.
We need to think we're the best team in the league and we have the best players in the league and we will win.

The Spurs actually won the title in spite of him, which makes that title even more impressive. Tim Duncan is so good that even Kevin Willis 's constant miscues just by being on the floor couldn't cripple the Spurs.

You know what it always has been a rivalry for me. I hate the F'in Spurs. I hate the fact they have three rings. I want the Rockets to catch up now and take back what is ours. I refuse to share the Texas glory with the Spurs. I want the rockets to take it all! CRUSH THE SPURS! WE CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think the Spurs are really capable of a real rivalry. I mean, they played the Lakers in the playoffs every year for many years in a row and never developed any real hatred there like Sacramento and Portland did.
