how easy do you think it is to make a contending team? how easy do you think it is to acquire a superstar? instead of drafting one?

DM may not be the best at getting us a superstar, but he is a great GM when it comes to improving the bench, our role players, and our key starters.

And exactly how many championships are not won by superstars?

The best player on a team which wins a championship has a way of becoming known as a superstar after the fact, even if they weren't necessarily considered one beforehand.

That's like one per 30 years. Good luck.

This is definitely true. That's because the playoffs has a way of molding players into superstars. We saw that last year when it all came together for him and he started playing like a superstar. And with Dirk. So IMHO we don't really need to trade for a superstar, we just need to develop the players we do have and keep adding other pieces.

No, sorry but that's not true at all!

More often than not, a championship VALIDATES who everyone already thought was a legitimate superstar - which was the case with Dirk and prior to him Garnett and before that Wade and so on.

Assuming Lebron wins one - it will be the same thing, and the same with Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard.

We've seen enough to know they're superstars. That's why they win MVP's and are perennial all-stars and win accolades like "best defensive player of the year", "scoring champions" etc. etc. etc.

But minus a championship, there is a glaring hole in terms of where they belong compared to the best of the best.

You're pretty much posting an oxymoron here, if everyone thinks he's a true superstar why the need to validate it? For example, before Dirk won a ring and basically remind everyone of Bird during this playoff run people were still calling him Irk and soft and all that BS, esp. after that chokejob during their finals against Miami and the beatdown at the hands of Nelson and GS. MJ was also called a ballhog before he started winning, Lebron is called a choke artist because he always defers to Wade, and now Rose's effectiveness is being questioned, because last year his team seems to play better without him and in the playoffs he shot something like 30% FG, 4% FG in clutch situations...not exactly what I would call Jordanesque.

Sigh. No one is saying this. Morey has made a number of mistakes. Just off the top of my head, Gay-for-Battier was a big loss, signing Ariza to the full MLE largely on the basis of his playoff performance was dumb, and while Jeremy Lin probably will top out as an above-average starter rather than a superstar, he'll certainly be better than Jonny Flynn ever will. Morey makes mistakes. Guess what? So do R.C. Buford, Sam Presti, Danny Ainge, and every other GM in the league. Morey is not infalliable, nor is he a god, and you won't find anyone saying these things, but the fact remains he's a top five GM and he's better than anyone we could realistically replace him with.

I assume you're referring to Hill, Thabeet, Williams, and Flynn. The hope was that, like Lowry, the lightbulb would come on for one or two of them and they would start to produce at a high level. It's not common, but it happens. Nobody would have considered LaMarcus Aldridge, Luol Deng, or Steve Nash to be on their way to All-Star status a couple years into their careers. We took four low-risk gambles and they didn't pay off. Perhaps we could have found four vets at the same cost who would have produced marginally better, but that isn't what our team needs. We need to acquire studs to build around, not win an extra 1.5 games per year. I'm struggling to understand what you think we should have done instead.

You're opposed to acquiring players for pennies on the dollar? What other tactic do you think we should be pursuing?

Even if those players never won championships, they would've still been remembered as superstars. Just like Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, and the hated Karla Malone.

People have those criticisms about them because they're superstars and usually you expect the best out of them. Winning championships just shuts the haters up.

Maybe the Rockets really did want Fisher to stay with the team this year and then they'd try to trade him in the offseason.

I agree with others, it doesn't make sense to eat all that salary for a protected late first rounder.

What? They build around Dirk for years and years...trying to get the right mix around him. The franchise revolved around him...he took them to the Finals twice and was the lead dog on a team that won them their first title. They've been in the discussion as a contender because of him for a long time now.

Dirk is an 11 time All Star....he's been 1st team All NBA 4 times...he's been 2nd team All NBA 5 other times (so 9 years out of his career he's been 1st or 2nd team All NBA). He won an MVP in 06/07...and has finished in Top Ten of MVP voting in 8 different years. He completely transformed the franchise he plays for.

Dirk Nowitzki is EXACTLY the kind of player the Rockets do not have...and do not really have anyone even close to. Let's stop pretending like that doesn't matter....aside from one season in Detroit and one season in 1979, the NBA has absolutely, positively been about acquiring stars who win rings. If you want to be in that discussion, you need to have that caliber of player.
