I've been looking at play by plays for the Rockets this season and I thought it might be interesting to tally different shot types for each player. There are at times some inaccuracies in the play by plays, so everything may not add up exactly to the official stats. I tried to cover all types for field goal attempts, but I didn't bother to distinguish certain "modifiers" like turnaround, driving, floating, reverse, and the like. Some shots that were categorized in the play by play as "jump shots" may actually have been attempted fairly close to the basket, which is why Chuck shows up with 24 jump shot attempts. More generally, jump shots refer to shots that weren't designated as a layup, hook shot, fade away, dunk, tip, or 3-pt shot. Here were the results, including percentages, through 2/11: Code: [B]3pt Shots Jump Shot Fade Away Shot Made Attempts Made Attempts Made Attempts [/B] Alston 82 248 33.1% 62 167 37.1% 0 2 0.0% McGrady 53 165 32.1% 151 351 43.0% 12 17 70.6% Battier 90 234 38.5% 25 61 41.0% 1 3 33.3% Scola 0 2 0.0% 74 177 41.8% 1 2 50.0% Yao 0 2 0.0% 118 335 35.2% 19 34 55.9% Wells 8 36 22.2% 41 149 27.5% 3 8 37.5% Landry 0 0 n/a 13 23 56.5% 0 0 n/a Hayes 0 1 0.0% 8 24 33.3% 0 1 0.0% Brooks 20 72 27.8% 12 26 46.2% 0 1 0.0% Head 47 132 35.6% 26 67 38.8% 2 2 100.0% Mutombo 0 0 n/a 0 1 0.0% 0 0 n/a James 24 74 32.4% 28 90 31.1% 0 0 n/a Francis 4 17 23.5% 6 19 31.6% 0 0 n/a [I]Total 328 983 33.4% 564 1490 37.9% 38 70 54.3% [/I] Code: [B]Hook Shot Layup Shot Dunk Shots Made Attempts Made Attempts Made Attempts[/B] Alston 1 1 100.0% 67 121 55.4% 0 0 n/a McGrady 1 1 100.0% 56 118 47.5% 20 22 90.9% Battier 9 13 69.2% 30 47 63.8% 0 1 0.0% Scola 6 12 50.0% 86 144 59.7% 2 2 100.0% Yao 77 137 56.2% 91 163 55.8% 78 86 90.7% Wells 0 1 0.0% 89 167 53.3% 25 27 92.6% Landry 1 1 100.0% 17 35 48.6% 20 21 95.2% Hayes 6 14 42.9% 51 82 62.2% 2 3 66.7% Brooks 0 0 n/a 23 42 54.8% 0 0 n/a Head 0 0 n/a 46 88 52.3% 0 0 n/a Mutombo 0 1 0.0% 0 2 0.0% 1 2 50.0% James 0 1 0.0% 23 54 42.6% 0 0 n/a Francis 0 0 n/a 8 20 40.0% 0 0 n/a [I]Total 101 182 55.5% 587 1083 54.2% 148 164 90.2%[/I] Code: [B]Tip Shot Made Attempts[/B] Alston 0 1 0.0% McGrady 1 2 50.0% Battier 4 9 44.4% Scola 7 9 77.8% Yao 9 17 52.9% Wells 3 8 37.5% Landry 2 4 50.0% Hayes 3 10 30.0% Brooks 0 0 n/a Head 1 1 100.0% Mutombo 0 1 0.0% James 0 0 n/a Francis 1 1 100.0% [i]Total 31 63 49.2% [/i]
let me get this right Mcgrady has taken 17 fadeaway shots in this season? even given inconsistancies in the counting thats not a large figure So which poster on this board keeps harping on that Mcgrady does alot of 18 footer fadeaways?
According to the play by plays, that's all. It's possible that some were just written down as a normal jumper. That one is probably more subjective than the others.
I was wrong I thought Bonzi does everything terrible except Dunking. I didnt know he can make his layups over 50 percent of the time. So is Tmacs fadeaway still considered a bad shot even though hes shooting 70 percent?
that seemed hard to believe to me too. maybe he had to be in a backward motion for it to count as a fadaway. either way, it's not the fadaways that bother people... it's the contested shots...
I'm surprised that it only showed 13 hook shot attempts for Battier. I thought he attempted one every few games.
95% of his shots are contested. the only ones that aren't are the breakaway dunks or the rare open 3s he gets from yao's double teams. so basically every shot tmac takes is a bad shot then right? to me, tmac can take any shot he wants as long as he mixes it up with drives and get his teammates involved first. save his energy for the 4th.
i'd say 95% of them are. it's difficult to judge tmac because he's such a poor spot up shooter. he almost never makes the open shots...the easy shots. he's like steve francis in the same way that they need to dribble before they shoot in order to have a chance at making it. that is a tell tale sign that he's a slasher, a driver... not a shooter. not to beat a dead horse but he's at his best when attacking the rim and using his shot as a secondary or even tertiary attack after passing which he is really great at.
Yeah I don't know what he meant by that but I think he meant well contested shots. Like hand up in his grill fading away "bad shot even for T-Mac" shots, which I understand are annoying sometimes but he rarely takes shots THAT bad so it should be a moot point. T-Mac does have to start driving more, unless he is coasting then by all means its all good until the playoffs assuming we get in at a high(er) seed. BTW I love your sig but you should probably cite Kobe or Nike as a source or they could get you.
awesome thread. T-Mac is awfully accurate with his fadeaways, I didn't expect that! I knew he was good at it, but 70% is way above my expectations!
Durvasa should compile the % of his spot up shooting, because I see him as good shooter, spot up or otherwise. I can't remember a time where he missed more spot up shots than he made.
Haha I think he is trying to copy everyone's criticism of McGrady and got it mixed up. I think he meant il advised shot selections like when he pulls up for a 3 sometimes with plenty of time left on the shot clock. Yeah usually when Tmac drives good things happen. blah I sure Nike has more to worry about then some random guy posting on Clutchfans.
i should have specified. you're right. i didnt mean the usually contested shot like, theres a defender in his area. i meant the kind of shot that he had to change his release just to get the shot off. tmac takes a lot of those. he's an amazing player, but he's not a great shooter. he can take as many contested (same definition as above) layups and floaters as he wants. in fact, i wish he would take, minimally, half the amount of floaters that rafer does. i mean, i get it... he's worried about getting injured. i would hesitate to drive too. i'm just pointing out whats good for the rockets.
If I can recall correctly, Luther Head does have at least 1 dunk....the emphatic jam over Ronny Turiaf during the 1st game of the season
this tread is going to have me branded a tmac hater... tmac does a lot of good things for the rockets, but if he's ever camped out on the 3 point line, and the ball is kicked out to him for a wide open shot... usually doesn't go in. for some reason, he has a lot more success when he can dribble the ball before he shoots.
Ah, well 3 point shots, you've got me there. He's not great at spot-up 3 point shooting, I'll admit that. But I was referring to his spot-up midrange game, whenever he's open inside the 3 point line (which teams usually don't let happen), it's money.
haha well tmac is rarely unguarded inside the arch... usually that happens if he's able to get himself open through a screen...tat goes back to my point about him making more shots after a dribble than a spot up or even a catch and shoot.
