As I was nodding off last night, I was thinking back through all the different starting lineups this season, and wondering which one I thought was the best team overall.

The one that fit together the best.

    We started with: (Battier injured)

    Rafer
    Tmac
    Artest
    Scola
    Yao

    Followed by: (Tmac Sabatical)

    Rafer
    Battier
    Artest
    Scola
    Yao

Which then became: (Tmac and Ron hurt)

    Brooks
    Wafer
    Battier
    Scola
    Yao

Which eventually turned into what we have now: (Rafer traded, Tmac out)

    Brooks
    Battier
    Artest
    Scola
    Yao

There were a few others, but it seems those were the 4 that were most prevelant to me.

Which one did you guys think worked the best?

I actually think the one that had the best chemistry and mix was the Brooks, Wafer, Battier, Scola and Yao one.

They played the best team ball....remember Brooks and Wafer teaming up to beat the Celtics IN Boston?

To me, that team had the best chemistry and everyone played their role.

The current iteration would be 2nd, but because Ron is prone to just going one on 5, it breaks down too often for my taste.

The first lineup had Artest and McGrady but both of them were shooting below 40%...and Ron was in the 20's at one point. Two ball stoppers killed that one for me.

I just liked the crisp ball movement and attack the basket mentality of the Brooks and Wafer backcourt, along with the fact that they KNEW their role was to defer to Yao, there was a clear hierarchy with that squad.

Right now, the team breaks down too much when Ron decides to channel his inner Mobley and go off with the "I think I am great" when he is really only good.

I don't think that one played very much, certainly not enough to warrant a poll option...

    Durv,

Where is the Brooks and Wafer lineup? Where Rafer was out with a hamstring and Ron and Tmac were also out...the Boston game etc...and can you link your stats?

    Thanks,

Brooks and Wafer never started together, as far as I can tell.

    Durv,

You are right, I just went back and reviewed the box scores, Rafer started, but sucked so bad that Brooks played the majority of the minutes......with Wafer.

Boston game in the Garden for instance

Dang.....maybe Adelman should give that lineup a go?

    ;)

These links may also be of interest. Stats on 5-man units used by the Rockets during the season.

The third lineup you mentioned has only seen the floor 12.5 minutes, 24 possessions, over the course of the season. Not sure if it happened all in one game or what. In that span, the Rockets outscored the opponent 23 to 18.

    Thanks,

For some reason, I thought that Rafer was out at that time, and did recall the Brooks to Wafer pass for 3.....I was wrong about them starting together.

I know that Wafer played VERY well when Artest and Tmac were out, and would like to see him get more run.....

It would be interesting to see him play a little more with Brooks, the speed they have would be outstanding on the perimeter....

That would be interesting, and I'm surprised we haven't seen it more. Maybe the Rockets are worried about the defense with Brooks and Wafer as the backcourt. Or perhaps they feel their style of play on offense (one on one, attacking) overlaps too much.

I think the starting five sans Artest and McGrady had the best chemistry, but obviously there was a lack of depth once you went to the bench. The lineup now would be a very close second...but is ultimately hurt at times by Ron's insistence on taking the game on his shoulders instead of staying within the system.

I know Adelman doesn't have the guts to do it, and Ron could very flip out because of it, but I'd be curious to see how a lineup of Brooks, Wafer, Battier, Scola and Yao performs with Landry, Artest, Lowry and Barry as your primary weapons off the bench.

Durvasa, may you please make a thread of how much Yao averages with McGrady in the lineup?

I think it would be interesting to see how much he would average even with a
    "this years version" Mcgrady.

Not sure it needs its own thread, but I'll put it here (stats are per-36 min):

T-Mac?  GP   min    FG   FGA     FT   FTA    ORB  DRB  TRB    AST   STL   BLK   TOV   PTS   GmSc    TS%
    yes     32   33.1   7.5  14.2    5.8  6.6    3.0  6.9  10.0   1.5   0.4   2.0   3.1   20.9  16.2   0.610
    no      40   33.9   8.0  14.4    5.0  5.9    2.7  8.4  11.0   2.1   0.4   2.2   3.5   21.1  16.8   0.621

Over the entire season, not much difference.

When everyone is healthy, I'd use what we used last year:

    Rafer, T-Mac, Battier, Scola, Yao

Alston is gone so I don't know what the point is of using him in a lineup.

I too liked the Brooks-Wafer back court. Von has been averaging 17.8 ppg when he starts and high efficiency too.
