https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2022/10/rockets-sign-pierria-henry-waive-trhae-mitchell.html The Rockets have made a pair of minor roster moves, waiving swingman Trhae Mitchell and signing free agent guard Pierria Henry, the team announced today. Mitchell, who played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers – Houston’s G League team – last season, signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Rockets this week and is expected to head back to the Vipers this fall. It appears a stint with the Vipers may also be in the cards for Henry, a longtime standout in Europe, where he won a Turkish League championship with Fenerbahçe in 2022 and a Spanish League title in 2020 with Baskonia. The 29-year-old is a strong three-and-D player who was a member of the Wizards’ Summer League team in July. Henry played his college ball at Charlotte from 2011-15 and has exclusively played in Europe since then. Unless the Rockets have bigger plans for him, he may view a stint in the G League as his best shot to make it to the NBA. Houston still has a full 20-man roster following today’s roster moves.
News broke about the Mitchell signing yesterday and he's literally released today. The life of a fringe NBA player must be so scary.
It's worse. News broke about his signing in a thread not related to him and the fact he was released was posted in another thread earlier today. We're signing and releasing people and nobody really cares. lol.
Still, something tells me there's a bit of a signing bonus (or some kind of monetary compensation) just for signing. Mitchell likely made a bit of money, and it's not like he was going to make the roster anyway.
That's what I'm thinking as well. The Rox put a little money in these guys pockets to convince them to sign with them and keep Viper thing going.
Their contracts are non-guaranteed and won't give them much more than a few hours pay (if that). But it gives an incentive for the player. If they sign an exhibit 10 and are waived prior to the season starting, they can earn $50k bonus by spending at least 60 days with the NBA teams GLeague affiliate. That is a pretty nice incentive for these guys considering they make about $35k a year for G League... It also puts them on the short list for 10 day contracts and some extra $$
Now's the chance Rockets. John Butler was waived by NO. Go get 'em while you can. They could definitely use a 7 foot two way 3 and D player on the team.
I checked him in Basketball Reference. Amazing. One inch taller and 20 pounds lighter than Chet Holmgren
This is a very cool signing to me. Top PG in Europe for years, on the radar of Real Madrid, where all his PGs in the last decade have been NBA players (Sergio Rodriguez, Sergio Llull, Luka Doncic, Facu Campazzo). Not only is he an elite PG in Europe, but his qualities could translate well to the NBA game. His identity is that he is a dog. He's a tall, long, strong, physical PG who is very disruptive on the defensive end, on and off the ball. Has a super high motor at this end, being always very active, moving his feet and his hands, what combined with his body type, craftiness and basket IQ make him a nightmare for opposite teams at some nights. Will put a lof of pressure on the ball, deflect passes, help at rebounding, be the first to appear at transition defense, won't hesitate to put his body in front of anybody. Think about deflections, steals, charges, long rebounds, hustle plays. Offensively, he really likes to push the tempo, is a good reader and a good passer. May struggle to finish near the basket at NBA level, since he's a fast guy but not super quick, neither a great leaper, does not have a powerful last step. The NBA comparison would be Patrick Beverley. I think Pierria has more offensive talent (creativity), he's a better handler and passer than Pat, but is not the quality shooter Beverley is right now at NBA range (although his 3PT %s of last seasons are really good). Defensively is where he's that kind of guy. Pat also started playing in Europe. Present some similarities with Nix too as a big bodied ball handler (he's 6-5/6-6). I doubt he signed to stay in the G-League, he will compete for the backup PG spot with Nix. At the very least he can be helpful at practices for our young guards, they will hate him. Henry will be a rookie in the NBA but he's a savvy experienced vet at competitive basketball. He's been a league champion in Spain and Turkey, leaded Euroleague in steals a couple of seasons ago. He's considered one of the best defenders at his position in Europe. Really good complement to our young PGs. Interesting signing by the Rockets.
You're right. Just let Boban waste roster space. Skinny people never get bigger. His defense and 3 point shooting doesn't matter. Plus all of the centers we have are great floor spacers.
