    http://www.hoops hype.com/salaries/houston.htm

connect the hoops and hype together to get the link to work. I guess the site is banned from this forum.

it hurts to look at, we have three players that are overproducing for their salaries (cat, yao, JJ) and we have three that are not earning their paychecks (steve, cato, MoT). if we are paying francis that much in 2008 and he has the same stats, im going to cry.

Looking at that site, it is clear to see that 2006/2007 has been the year this franchise has targeted to allow as many contracts to expire as possible to 1) sign Yao Ming to a max contract and 2) be a SERIOUS player in the FA market that year.

Of course, the chances we keep this same team through to 2006 is pretty unlikely.

I think the philosophy is to get rid of Weatherspoon, Cato, and Taylor's contract at the end of the 06/07 season. It's pretty clear that any trade is unlikely going to involve those three albatross contracts. So even if we trade Francis, Mobley or some other player, we're still getting a huge chunck of cap space in two years.

If the right star FA is available then, and Yao has progressed to superstar levels in 2 years, we could be looking at the beginning of a dynasty. Of course, this is the optimist inside me talking, and it is unfortunately going to be at least 2 years before the big shakeup.

Utah's cap structure alone should earn Jerry Sloan CoY honors....

Utah really knows not to overpay the players. Only Ostertag is overpaid but they will get rid of after next season.

Cool site! Thanks. Jimmy J is very underpaid. It's a steal that we got him as a free agent for that kind of money.

This is an interesting consideration but we are desperate to make changes this off season.

The CBA will expire after next season, so things may change drastically when re-negotiating begins.

It's irrational to bank on 3 years in the future.

If in 3 years we are in need of a star player and have the space to sign one, then something went terribly wrong.

    Give Yao max money??

I don't think he's a max type player, yet. I would rather give him MoT/Cato type of a contract and hope we get our money's worth.

I know some will say well then what about Francis getting max? Well, we all see how thats worked out. I think it'll be a miracle if Francis finishes his contract in a Rox uniform considering his play and mentality as of late.

As far as Yao, I'd rather try and save some money for some good players to compliment his style.

Well, then kiss Yao goodbye and build the team around SF3, Cato and Mo. That sure sounds a winner to me.

Contract negotiations work differently now than how they worked when Francis was signed to the max. Signing Yao to the max won't be nearly as costly as it was signing Francis to the max. Correct me if I'm wrong here though.

A player on the FA market is only worth as much as what the highest bidder will pay for him. And although I'm not NBA GM material, I can say for a fact that if we don't give Yao a max-contract, other teams will be eagerly take him off our hands.

Nope Steve signed his contract with the current CBA. Yao will pretty much get the same deal, with slight adjustments to the "Max Salary" based on NBA revenues and stuff like that.
