Do you guys think that our players are doing too many extra activities outside the court? As we all see during the halftime shows, everyone's involved in some other events like help here, help there... karaoke. I don't mean it's bad to help, but if we want to win games.... too much distraction is not helping. What about the other teams, do they have the same outreach programs that we are doing here? Thanks.
another, "why is he having his own life he should be in the gym" post..... they are entitled to have their own lives, much like we are. I'm sure every one of us could do better at work if we stayed there more, thought about it more, and "worked" some at home instead of taking care of personal matters. Unfortunately we can't expect people to do that. If the players are going to practice, games, meetings, etc, and putting in 100% there then they've done their job. Of course there's working out and things like that, but that's a given in their field. as for charity stuff, i'm sure they do very little comapred to the people who really put the show together. The players just need to shwo up at a certain time, smile, interact, pose, etc. and then they're on their way.
What kind of distraction would they be causing? They're not activities that require drinking, partying, or anything like that. It's a simple meet and greet the mahority of the time, plant a tree, visits a classroom, etc. It's nothing strenous physically and nothing that should be stressful, so in what other way would it cause a distraction? I'd imagine they're not going to completely cancel practice to have an event. Their jobs are to play ball and they should have access to the court almost 24/7, so they should have several hours a day to schedule their practice and players should be available to attend. If an event is scheduled for their normal practice time i'm sure they can ppostpone practice an hour or two. I dont see that as a distraction either.
Your opinion is kind of selfish, don't you think? They aren't public puppets, bred for entertainment... They have lives & the right to live it however they want, and if that includes giving back, good for them.
He's not doing a "concert". You make it sound like the guy is going to rock it out with Guns n Roses or Jay Z. It's a charity auction, dinner, and karaoke. Its also not just battier, but his wife as well. I'm sure she handled a lot ofthe planning or had a team help out. Battier and other rockets just show up. That's ONE night and not until april 8th, and it's in the evening, hours after practice.
And to answer your original question, yes other teams have similar events. I believe the league itself makes it a requirement for teams to be involved in certain activities and events. Teams probably have some of their own, but the NBA does a lot of charity work as a whole.
Are the Rockets doing too much work on court that's distracting them from their lives off the court? If the players spent less time working out and training, they could be having a lot of fun off the court. That is the real question.
They say all work and no play makes a dull boy. In truth, however, all work and no play makes a tired, burned out man. You have to do something else to retain balance in your life. Working too much will only eventually make you worse at your job.

Tiger Woods had many distractions, also, but it didn't keep him from being the top golfer in the world.
