They need to do so before he has a chance to explore other options besides he has earned his place on this team.
I'm pretty sure they will but I don't know if right now is the time. Let's see how he does when more pressure is put on him.
They was going to up Brooks too eventually, but not sure if that is the correct decision at this time yet. I think they mentioned it to motivate him to produce more before making the decision.
I think he's a restricted so I would depend on the Market for him. He's will be a cornerstone here for sure, I'm 99% sure of it.
I dont think they will, unless they can resign him for way under market value. Locking him up now kills thier summer flexibility. If another premiere free agent PF comes knocking in summer 2010 and they need funds, they can renounce thier rights to Scola and upgrade the position. There is no real risk of losing him if one doesnt come knocking because he is a restricted free agent, so as long as they choose to match, he isnt going anywhere.
What would the market value for him be? In one hand, he is an old unathletic power forward who only uses one hand. In the other hand, there will be tons of teams with a lot of cap space. Not all of them will have a LeBron, Bosh, or Wade. More money to spend, Scola could be getting a big raise.
I think Scola will get full MLE. They probably want to give him a 3-year contract, but scola and his agent will want a 5-year contract. I guess finally he will get a 4-year full MLE contract.
Short of a trade for an all-star, there's zero chance of the Rockets locking up Scola before FA. Morey's not going to kill his cap space for a 31 yr old average starting PF.
I dunno but he is underpaid for a big man. If he brings his stats up to 18/9 ish, it will be hard to sign him for under 7 mil.
He's a restricted free agent next summer, however, so the Rockets have the right of first refusal, assuming they tender him a qualifying offer. A full MLE deal would be a steal in my opinion; Scola is a guy who's going to have value throughout the deal even as his athleticism declines, much like Shane Battier. The Rockets could be put in a very difficult spot if some team comes knocking on July 1st and offers him substantially more than the MLE; anything above $6M will eat into the cap space the Rockets will have available for a sign and trade.
I agree. In my opinion easily worth $7 million plus. Certainly more than the MLE. If Luis doesn't get moved next summer (and I hope he doesn't) we'll wait until the last minute to extend him because of the cap situation. That's the way I understand it. VIVA SCOLA!!
I agree I think he will get about a 3 year 21 million dollar contract with the Rockets but I would go up to 4 years 40 million as my peak to pay him. If he cant be sign I have confidence that Morey has an aceup his sleave somewhere. This is the guy that got a second round pick for Steve Francis and the team he traded him to cut him a couple days later.
I love Scola, and everything he brings to the team, but 4/$40M is ridiculous; he'd have to be a guaranteed 20/9 player if I was going to commit that much to him. That trade with the Grizzlies was also a no-brainer deal for the Grizzlies; the Rockets I believe paid for the remainder of his salary, probably cut the Grizzlies a little more, and also gave them back the 36th pick in the draft, which would have cost around $2M to acquire, based on what was given up for Taylor and Llull. I suppose if you count the fact that he got the pick for free by drafting Darrell Arthur in front of the Grizzlies, then yes, they got a conditional 2011 2nd rounder, and all they had to do was pay $3.5M+ for it.
No sense may be going to far. If you have a guy you most likely want to stay, and offer him a contract worth a little bit under his market value. That guy might take it because he is safe to play all this year. Anyway, i don't think Scola is eligible for an extension. He doesn't have 3 years in the league yet.
