For many years the Rockets do not have a reliable backup center for Yao Ming.
Look at Portland, they have three 7 footers to put on Yao.

Battier is good defensively, but he can't score.
Scola is not big enough to habdle the big guys.

that's why I always laugh when people say Morey should get EOTY. How is Joey Dorsey doing? ;)

Mutombo has been a reliable backup center. The last two seasons he stepped up big time when Yao went down for prolonged injuries.

Are the Rockets allowed to add a player to the playoff roster at this stage?

...and... he wasn't on the team when season began. So that's apparently not the plan.

They were using Deke as back up C. That's how he got injured as our Yao's backup.

He has been a reliable backup center and I admit we haven't had much cap room but a lot of us have been wanting a younger center/forward with height, length and athleticism for a long time. Maybe you don't think that's necessary but that is part of the reason why many opposing teams hammer us.

I was worried about Birdman causing us problems because of his drug use history but he is someone that I wanted before his problems cropped up. He has made a solid comeback.

what are you talking about we have Joey "FN" Dorsey!... Nevermind.. we better get someone to backup Yao in the offseason that's at least 7ft or long enough to rebound and block shots ala Deke (just not as old).

Eventhough he is a reliable backup center, can't really score. We need more offence from the backup center. The way it is now, the Rockets are undersized.

It was a direct contradiction to Deke not being used.

I was really confused that Morey didn't acquire Marcin Gortat from the Magic in the trade.

Most of the 7" backup Cs are just slow immobile foul machines that take up space in the middle for defense and rebounds. The only offensive backup Cs are 6'9-6'11" . It's hard to get both a 7 footer and a decent offensive player and can rebound.

Thank you, this has been a big problem. Having a different type of backup center/pf can help to diminish the fronting problem. It could lead to fast breaks even with our limited point guard play.

It's hard without a doubt but the Rockets should make this a priority. Guys like Elson can be obtained relatively cheaply. Birdman will be out of our league unfortunately.

David Lee is not an all star and neither is Camby but they could help out a great deal in my opinion. I admit it will be almost impossible to obtain them.

That is why some people suggest the Rockets should get Wang zhizhi. He is big and has decent offensive skills.
