My guess is that Don Nelson will win coach of the year. The Mavs record is certainly better than most prognosticators thought, plus Nelson is generally well liked, plus he went through the health problems. All that adds up to a sentimental (and deserved) award.

Larry Brown has a team doing better than expected and, by the way, has the best record in the league. I don't think there is any way another coach beats him out.

From 9th to 5th and climbing...the Mavs look pretty good, and Nelson may get COY.

I would love for our boys to sneak in and grab a 7 or 8 seed and increase Rudy's chances for COY.

Is there an owner of the year award? Mark Cuban certainly would be up there in the running. Man, has he made some ballsy moves.

No need to go looking up Patricia's... just check the History section. Mavs were 40-42 last year.

Wow. Don Nelson, COY? Never has a coach/GM consistently done less with more over the course of a career while somehow managing to remain employed. He's like a mutual fund that underperforms every year and then finally, by a roll of the probability dice, beats the index handily in one year -- and suddenly he's COY material.

Those of you who bought stock in Yahoo a year ago, feel free to bet what's left on Nellie.

The Kings might not be too much better off in terms of their record.

But, this year they are actually a good team, and not just a 1st round exit.

I'd also have to go with Dallas for most improved, with the Kings as the runner-up. I'd give Adelman COY, but Nelson and Larry Brown will likely be considered also.

I have been looking and looking but I can't find records for last year for all the teams.

Do the Rockets have the best turnaround in terms of a win/loss differential from last year to this point in the season?

Just from memory I would guess that Philly, Miluakee or Orlando might be the closest to us.

If we can finish the season strong we should have a 20 game improvement - from 10 games under .500 to 10 games over .500.

How much of a shot does Rudy have for Coach of the Year?

Not by record necessarily... they were 41-41 last year. On their current pace, they'll be about 20 games better than last year. The Rockets can do at least that easily.

Most Improved Team - a tossup between the Mavs (the obvious candidate) and - grab yer seat - the Clips.

The Clippers have gotten to the point where they can occasionally beat a good team, which is a far cry from the past decade, when they knew they couldn't beat anybody. They are young and fast, and if you don't watch out they'll steal a game from you (as we have painfully learned this season).

Of course, inexperience, immaturity, bad coaching, bad management, etc still leave them with a losing team. But as far as distance travelled over the past year, they're comparable to the Mavs...
