Anybody think the Rockets will keep this pick (if the get it), or package it with the #15 to move up?
I always thought we transferred the pick rights straight to ATL, turns out, we didn't. Interesting, however I'm not sure the Rockets can keep the pick- We owe Memphis our pick next year, on ifs, ands, or buts. If we owe Atlanta a pick by 2004, and keep this pick, we'd be without a first rounder 2 years in a row, which Ted Stepien prevents us from doing. If the Rockets were to trade something for a first round pick either next year, or in 2004, it could be possible. No thanks on Juan Dixon for a first round contract. I wouldn't mind Dickau, Welsch, or Williams at 23 if they lasted. Betting odds say it goes straight to Atlanta-what are the chances we get a first rounder worse than #23?
What is your source on this information? I thought it went straight to Atlanta too. But if we DO get it, then I think that Houston ought to try to trade down, gaining another pick by 2004, with someone who's dying to get someone who "slipped" such as a point guard like Frank Williams or Dan Dickau, one of the Euros like Nachbar, Welsch, Scola, Diaw, or even one of the big men, like Marcus, Jennings, Gadzuric, etc. Then we could trade that future pick to Utah, and pick up a project like Jamaal Sampson... or someone else who "slipped." (it'd be cool if Nachbar slipped, wouldn't it...)
Then our 15 from this year won't do the trick either? What if it is not a top 13 next year? Are they stuck with it?
Detroit traded Theo Ratliff, Aaron McKie and a first rounder to Philadelphia for Stackhouse, Eric Montross and a second round pick. Philadelphia then traded that pick to Houston for Mirsad Turcken. Houston then traded that pick (or maybe not that specific pick but a pick that matches it's requirements) to Atlanta for Terrence Morris.
Take Jiri Welsch with the 23. Or trade down and take Dan Dickau. Houston should keep all their picks, or acquire more, and blow their wad this draft. Rocks have got to start winning already. Another lottery pick season will NOT help the Rockets one iota b/c they cannot keep the picks.
So basically then: Because we picked Turcsan instead of Rashard Lewis, we traded Lewis for TMo!?!?!?!?!
If we are to give them a pick this season, it must be top 13. If we give them a pick next season instead, it must be either our own pick or one within 2 spots of it.
Look guys, that was NOT a deep draft... and we weren't the only ones who passed on Lewis, who went #32. Tircan looked good at the time, and we had Scottie at SF, in fact, this last year Tircan was the MVP of the Euro League. After Dickerson at #14, there weren't hardly ANY good players after that in the first round. At that point there were more gems in the second round than taken in the rest of the first, with Ruben Patterson (31), Rashard Lewis (32), Jelani McCoy (), Jerome James (36), Cuttino Mobely (41), and Jahidi White (43). Fortunately, we got one of them, in Mobely. The remaining guys still playing in the league, taken in the first round after Dickerson were Bryce Drew, Matt Harpring, Pat Garrity, Radoslav Nesterovic , Ricky Davis, Tyrone Lue, Al Harrington, Felipe Lopez, and Nasr Mohammed. ... not exactly stars... At least the Rockets were able to parlay Tircan into a future first round pick, which they used to take Terrence Morris, although if I'm understanding correctly, we might get more out of Detroit than that... and traded Bryce Drew for a future first rounder, which we haven't collected from Chicago, yet. At least we didn't do what Milwaukee did that year at the draft and traded Dirk Nowitski/Pat Garrity for Robert (Tractor) Traylor. How would you like that one on your conscience! ... but we ALL groaned, when Houston passed on Lewis THREE times, when they had indicated to our homegrown star and his family that they would take him with one of their picks. I was definitely in shock... Turcan ... who? and I didn't know why we didn't trade up to Boston with our three picks to take Paul Pierce. I couldn't believe he slipped all the way to #10.
I don't think Boston would have done that. But still, nothing, and I mean nothing, is worse than lying to a player and to his family when you have 3 picks in a draft. That draft would have been considered one of the best in awhile for any team with Dickerson (Francis), Mobley, and Lewis.
Very true. CD and folks deserve credit for at least re-gaining first round picks for those blunders. And perhaps TMo will at least turn into a good and vital role player down the line. But it sure would be sweet if Lewis would come home for the mid level exception(initially). Then we would have him as he hits his prime, after someone else broke him in,and in addition to whatever came/comes from those picks. Stevie,TMo and ???
i can't see why everybody so high on Jiri Welsch. i 'm an estonian and we were on the same group in qualifications for last two european championchips. a year ago he wasn't nothing special. IMO not NBA material.
