    Short answer, there's no reason to cut him. Long answer, Lux Tax, operating above the cap, and teams aren't interested in him right now makes him neither tradeable or even worth cutting. Chances are come trade deadline he will be dealt or cut, or more than likely both. If there was any real interest in Melo the Rockets would do what they can to facilitate a move. At this moment, a wait and see approach is best.

    Melo is a broken toy Tilman bought but can't refund so instead of throwing it away, he's kept it in the attic.

    People don't know but the last couple of decades
    Melo has been nursing an injury
    and
    the Rockets are giving him time to heal
    and get his mind right

    I’m sure they are holding on to him so that closer to the deadline they can ship him somewhere in a package deal either with the Lakers, Celtics, or some other team. They could use the contract for cap matching purposes.
