Not much of a surprise considering the team they faced brought their 2nd best player and a really good one in Dirk Nowitzki. Here's the recap and scoring for each player.

    Dallas Beat Houston
    By: Chris Monter
    Date: 7/22/2000

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Houston Rockets 77-59 in the final game of Day 2 at the Rocky Mountain Revue. It was the first game for both of the Texas teams. The Mavericks played without Courtney Alexander (ankle), Donnell Harvey (groin) and Etan Thomas (back).

Dallas led after one quarter 17-12, but Houston bounced back to take a 29-27 halftime lead. No player had more than eight points at halftime and the Houston starting backcourt of Bryce Drew and Moochie Norris shoot a combined two of 14 from the field in the first half. Both teams struggled with their shooting in the first half as Houston shot just 33.3% and Dallas made just 32.3% from the field. Dallas outscored the Rockets 27-12 in the third quarter to open a 56-47 third quarter margin.

Dallas was paced by second rounder Eduardo Najera and Marcus Brown with a game-high 21 points. Bryant Smith chipped in with 13 and Dirk Nowitzki added ten points.

Houston was led by Mark Young with 16 points. Mark Pope added 12 and rookies Jason Collier and Dan Langhi had six points each for the Rockets. Moochie Norris, Kenny Thomas and Tyrone Washington had four points each and Bryce Drew had two points.

Also, I had one question to Clutch or whoever has Revue info. What happened to Alex Jensen? I like his game, and thought he might have a shot to do well in this Revue. I noticed however that he was not on our roster. Was he cut too in addition to Rawlings?

Alex Jensen was there, he didn't dress though. I have no idea why he isn't listed in the players.

Well, the good news is that Dan Langhi only missed 2 shots -- in the shootaround. He must have been 28 of 30. During the game he didn't amaze, but I'm not sure that this game was for the players that already have contracts. He rarely got the ball... but always had good positioning and played better defense than I would have thought.

I call rebate on the trade: Eduardo killed the Rockets. He rebounded his own miss twice. He posted up 'thepus' Collier twice in a row, and scored on him both times. He stole the board from Collier probably 3 times. Collier was slow and quick to shoot 3s more than play inside.

What is up with the Rockets' mismatch philosophy? During the end of the third, beginning of the fourth, they played three centers at once. Mark Pope (think of a tall Shandon -- this guy is always moving w/o the ball), Axel (much tougher than Collier) and Tyronne (impressive positioning and defense) were in the game at the SAME TIME. But again, the Rockets goal here was not necessarily to win the game.

Bryce Drew anyone? Bryce plays good defense. His ball handling abilities are alot better than I would have thought too. However, the defenses seemed to collapse on him a number of times. I was slow to discern whether or not the rest of the team was not bailing him out on positioning, or if he merely got himself in stupid situations. His shooting was horrible.

Kenny Thomas... Kenny I love you, but get in the damn post. Is this what they ask of you? Is this the oh-so-mighty spacing philosophy? Power forwards and Centers that cannot shoot the 3? Kenny did impress with a cool hook shot and he works hard off of the glass. He did get called for travelling three times also.

Mark Young... Cuttino who? Mark Young is really fun to watch. He is fast, drives hard to the basket, rebounds, blocks shots, picks players... he does everything. I was amazed to see that he has been lose since '97. He would have scored in the low to mid 20s, but he was fouled on a few breakaways and near dunks... and his FT shooting is atrocious.

Don't expect the Rockets to win any games during the Revue, by the way. This game wouldn't have been 18 points close if Courtney, Donnell and Etan had played.

    More as I remember it...

The mavericks might have brought Dirk, but their 3 top draft picks did not play (who have been torching up the summer leagues). It looks like Rudys idea of the perfect picks, look more like CBA material. If they continue to play so poor against these type of players, what are they going to do against the NBA elite? Why did Bryce & Norris even show up, shooting for a combined 2 for 14 (or something). Looks like another lottery year.

This might be good news for the rockets next year - to have a lottery pick, multiple 1st round picks and a whole lot of cap space to sign some much needed size.

DONT GO CUTINO!!!! Please tell us we did not waste a lottery pick for you. We could of had a future star (alexander) and instead we got 2nd round material.

I tried to tell you guys about Eduardo. Too bad the Mavs got him because he's better than Collier and Langhi. Since Eduardo went to the Mavs I've taken up rooting for the Mavs. I'm still a huge Rock fan, but now I'm a Mav supporter when they aren't playing Houston.

    Soone,

Eduardo did everything. He isoed off of the right elbow (reminiscent of a former Rocket player [IMG]), he shot 3s off of an upper pick, he moved fluidly without the ball, he outhustled people 7" taller for rebounds, he posted up players guaranteed to $3.5 Million dollar contracts.

There are alot of truisms that go unquestioned throughout life.

Some people never question 40 hour work weeks.

Some people never question if we are alone in the universe.

Some people never question human hubris.

And some people never question if the Rockets truly know a damn thing about talent.

This is my first post. I just discovered this site (great site) . I have been a Rockets fan since 1986. I have been curious about the game and how the new draft picks will perform. First of all considering that this is the first game for the Rockets and the Mavs have already played in the Southern California summer leage, I expected the Rockets to lose. Intersting that Najera whom I was excited when the Rockets first picked him had a good game. You can not judge however from just one game. Evaluating Rockets past draft picks were mixed (good and bad). This year's draft reminded me of 1991 when the Rockets drafted Alec Kessler at No. 12 for the Miami Heat then traded down to No.15 to get Dave Jamerson and then also got No.32 which turn out to be Carl Herrera (we had to wait 3 years for him). Herrera was a good second round while Jamerson was a bust. Also in one draft day the Rockets has traded Popeye Jones to the Dallas Mavs for Eric Riley which kind of reminded me of Langie for Najera deal. Popeye Jones turned to be a great rebounder whom the Rockets needed badly and Riley was a bust. I hope our draft this year would not turn out to be like the past. However the Rockets had Excellent to good draft picks in the past: Sampson, McCray, Olajawon, Horry, Cassell, Dickerson, Mobley, Francis. Not so bad: Buck Johnson, Kenny Thomas, Drew. And flat out bad : Steve Harris, Derrick Chevious, John Turner, Jameson, Riley and of course passing up on Rashad Lewis couple of years ago and may be trading Pryzabila and Najera this year. Time will tell. Thanks guys.

    Hey Darkhorse...

were you behind the Rockets bench? I saw about 3 guys over there w/ Rocket t's on...

Anxious to see your notes. Hopefully it wasn't as bad as it looked to me (on a play-by-play basis).

[BANDWAGONFAN]OH MY GOD!!!!!! WE LOST A REVUE GAME!!! WE'RE HEADED STRAIGHT TO THE LOTTERY!!!! GO MAVS!!!![/BANDWAGONFAN]

Mark Pope? The name sounds vaguely familiar -- he's been around for a few years, hasn't he?

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion Langhi will turn out to be the greater of our two evils?

    Hey Achebe,
Yeah that was me behind the bench, with the girl. I decided to report player by player rather than play by play. (did the score really count?)
It was fun. Hung out with Matt Young, Rayford Young, and a few other guys a little after the game by the team bus. Was really impressed with Matt Young, but don't see he has much chance to make the team unless Cuttino really does split.
My report's in to Clutch, so maybe he'll post it and maybe not. [IMG] I'm very tired now so I may need to patch up the report later. Traffic was bad, took me 2 hours to get home... ugh...
Anyway, looking forward to tomorrow's game. Hopefully we'll have a better showing.

So you can tell how our whole season will pan out and that we got 2nd round material in the draft by one Revue game that you didn't even watch? Man, you're a smart one.

bobrek: Chuck Nuvitts has a championship ring and Karl Malone does not. Does that make Chuck better player than Malone.

Let's just make it clear that I was the original Kenny basher, and now everyone wants to join the bandwagon.
